The General Directorate for the Natural Environment is part of the Regional Government of the Region of Murcia – CARM, in Spain. It assumes the competences and functions in the planning and management of protected natural areas of the Natura 2000 Network, natural habitats and wild fauna and flora, as well as the promotion of the natural environment and the fight against climate change, representation in the Network of Environmental Authorities, forestry policy, river hunting and fishing and protection of wildlife. As a regional administration, CARM has highly relevant experience and the necessary organisational structures to carry out pilot testing and to implement capitalisation actions. Axis 6 of its operational plan focuses on the protection and preservation of natural environment in Murcia (incl. natural heritage sites). As the designated territorial authority, it is strategically involved in tourism management, mandated to collaborate with key stakeholders (e.g. tourism boards, public administrations, NGOs), for promoting environmental sustainability. It is the most experienced body in the region to: a) involve all interested parties, b) disseminate tools and re-orientate touristic routes, and c) transfer results into local policies. CARM has extensive experience in leading (QUALIGOUV, OTREMED, PROFORBIOMED) and participating in EU projects especially in the field of Med Programme and achieving objectives related to the protection and valorisation of natural heritage, especially Murcia’s forests.
