With a clear motto \u2014<strong data-start=\"401\" data-end=\"434\">turning knowledge into action<\/strong>\u2014 the event brought together policymakers, scientists, companies, EU program managers, and the general public to debate and take action against <strong data-start=\"578\" data-end=\"618\">PFAS and other emerging contaminants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"799\">EU-funded projects <strong data-start=\"642\" data-end=\"686\">MAR2Protect, ALERT-PFAS, and Life4Fgases<\/strong> led a diverse program that combined high-level debates, funding opportunities, and citizen science activities.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"806\" data-end=\"842\">A start with a sense of urgency<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"844\" data-end=\"992\">The opening session featured <strong data-start=\"873\" data-end=\"891\">Rolf-Jan Hoeve<\/strong> (European Commission, DG ENVI) and <strong data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"951\">Ana Cristina Carrola<\/strong> (Portuguese Environment Agency \u2013 APA).<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1078\">\n<p data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1078\">\u201c<strong data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1056\">Replacing PFAS is a problem we need to tackle together.<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 <em data-start=\"1060\" data-end=\"1076\">Rolf-Jan Hoeve<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1277\">Both emphasized that <strong data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1163\">PFAS are a global challenge that requires global solutions<\/strong>. Their message was clear: <strong data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1236\">Europe must act quickly and in cooperation<\/strong> to protect health and the environment.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1279\" data-end=\"1282\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1351\">Roundtable 1: Policy recommendations for emerging contaminants<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1515\">Moderated by journalist <strong data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1392\">Rita Santos<\/strong> (Biosfera, Farol de Ideias), the first roundtable brought together key voices from academia, institutions, and industry:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1517\" data-end=\"2317\">\n<li data-start=\"1517\" data-end=\"1620\">\n<p data-start=\"1519\" data-end=\"1569\"><strong data-start=\"1519\" data-end=\"1543\">V\u00e9ronique data-start=\"1750\" data-end=\"1773\">Prof. Mark Shiflett<\/strong> (University of Kansas): \u201cI propose a <strong data-start=\"1817\" data-end=\"1838\">\u2018Lisbon Protocol\u2019<\/strong> to prioritize tackling the most harmful PFAS first.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1895\" data-end=\"2016\">\n<p data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"1926\"><strong data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"1914\">Romain Gandre<\/strong> (Veolia): \u201cWe need to <strong data-start=\"1943\" data-end=\"2013\">support municipalities with technology adoption and cost guidance.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2169\">\n<p data-start=\"2020\" data-end=\"2081\"><strong data-start=\"2020\" data-end=\"2037\">Norio Shibata<\/strong> (Nagoya Institute of Technology \u540d\u53e4\u5c4b\u5de5\u696d\u5927\u5b66): \u201cWe are sharing Japan\u2019s knowledge while comparing U.S. and European regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2171\" data-end=\"2317\">\n<p data-start=\"2173\" data-end=\"2222\"><strong data-start=\"2173\" data-end=\"2192\">Vanessa Gouveia<\/strong> (Ambigroup SGPS, Portugal): \u201cA <strong data-start=\"2230\" data-end=\"2254\">circularity approach<\/strong> is needed to reduce PFAS pollution in industrial processes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"2324\" data-end=\"2399\">Roundtable 2: Sustainable and safe PFAS for health and the environment<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2401\" data-end=\"2483\">The second roundtable shifted the focus to innovation and alternative materials:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"3379\">\n<li data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2637\">\n<p data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2538\"><strong data-start=\"2487\" data-start=\"3386\" data-end=\"3426\">Joint funding opportunities session<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3428\" data-end=\"3686\">In the afternoon, the spotlight turned to the fuel behind innovation: funding. The <strong data-start=\"3511\" data-end=\"3550\">Joint funding opportunities session<\/strong>, moderated by <strong data-start=\"3565\" data-end=\"3591\">Tamara Rodr\u00edguez Silva<\/strong> (FEUGA), offered a privileged moment to hear directly from EU and national program managers:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3688\" data-end=\"4379\">\n<li data-start=\"3688\" data-end=\"3800\">\n<p data-start=\"3690\" data-end=\"3800\"><strong data-start=\"3690\" data-end=\"3706\">Bernd Decker<\/strong> (CINEA) and <strong data-start=\"3719\" data-end=\"3736\">Vanda Pereira<\/strong> (APA) explained how to navigate LIFE and EC-managed programs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3801\" data-end=\"3915\">\n<p data-start=\"3803\" data-end=\"3915\"><strong data-start=\"3803\" data-end=\"3820\">Javier Pinedo<\/strong> (Life4Fgases) and <strong data-start=\"3839\" data-end=\"3854\">Ana Pereiro<\/strong> (MAR2Protect) shared success stories from funded projects.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3916\" data-end=\"4014\">\n<p data-start=\"3918\" data-end=\"4014\"><strong data-start=\"3918\" data-end=\"3935\">Ana Sutcliffe<\/strong> (ANI) outlined <strong data-start=\"3951\" data-end=\"3983\">Horizon Europe opportunities<\/strong> for Portuguese stakeholders.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4015\" data-end=\"4162\">\n<p data-start=\"4017\" data-end=\"4162\"><strong data-start=\"4017\" data-end=\"4033\">Raquel Rocha<\/strong> (Agency for Development and Cohesion \u2013 AD&amp;C) detailed how <strong data-start=\"4092\" data-end=\"4160\">Interreg funding connects regions and scales up local solutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4163\" data-end=\"4257\">\n<p data-start=\"4165\" data-end=\"4257\"><strong data-start=\"4165\" data-end=\"4183\">Isabelle Roger<\/strong> (Interreg SUDOE) highlighted the power of <strong data-start=\"4226\" data-end=\"4255\">cross-border cooperation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4258\" data-end=\"4379\">\n<p data-start=\"4260\" data-end=\"4379\"><strong data-start=\"4260\" data-end=\"4275\">Jo\u00e3o Araujo<\/strong> (ALERT-PFAS) showed how <strong data-start=\"4300\" data-end=\"4342\">Interreg projects can spark innovation<\/strong> in tackling emerging contaminants.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"4386\" data-end=\"4425\">European research networking forum<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4427\" data-end=\"4773\">The conference also opened space for the future: Portuguese research centers and companies \u2014<strong data-start=\"4519\" data-end=\"4570\">CEFITEC, CENSE, LAQV, LIBPhys, MARE, and UCIBIO<\/strong>\u2014 showcased their expertise and explored potential collaborations for <strong data-start=\"4640\" data-end=\"4678\">Horizon Europe, LIFE, and Interreg<\/strong>. The atmosphere was dynamic and fertile, sowing the seeds for tomorrow\u2019s EU-funded projects.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4780\" data-end=\"4826\">FUN HALL \u2013 Science in action for all ages<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4828\" data-end=\"4942\">Running in parallel, the <strong data-start=\"4853\" data-end=\"4865\">FUN HALL<\/strong> turned science into an accessible, creative, and participatory experience:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4944\" data-end=\"5224\">\n<li data-start=\"4944\" data-end=\"5001\">\n<p data-start=\"4946\" data-end=\"5001\">Exhibition of materials and posters from EU projects.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5002\" data-end=\"5089\">\n<p data-start=\"5004\" data-end=\"5089\">Interactive games on water contamination, resource reuse, and urban sustainability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5090\" data-end=\"5145\">\n<p data-start=\"5092\" data-end=\"5145\">Environmental trivia contests with surprise prizes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5146\" data-end=\"5224\">\n<p data-start=\"5148\" data-end=\"5224\">A cinema room screening short films, animations, and project testimonials.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5226\" data-end=\"5423\">\ud83c\udf1f The highlight of the afternoon was <strong data-start=\"5264\" data-end=\"5279\">\u201cAquaville\u201d<\/strong>, an interactive city simulation where more than <strong data-start=\"5328\" data-end=\"5370\">120 children from local summer schools<\/strong> learned how to protect a community from pollution.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5425\" data-end=\"5567\">\n<p data-start=\"5427\" data-end=\"5567\">\u201cThrough teamwork, quick thinking, and problem-solving, participants realized how environmental decisions shape the future of their city.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-start=\"5574\" data-end=\"5623\">A day of action, inspiration, and connection<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5625\" data-end=\"5790\">ALERT-PFAS\u2019s participation in ESFC Lisbon showed that the fight against PFAS is not only about identifying problems: it is about <strong data-start=\"5754\" data-end=\"5787\">building collective solutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5792\" data-end=\"5833\">The final message of the day was clear:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5835\" data-end=\"5920\">\u2705 <strong data-start=\"5837\" data-end=\"5858\">Science is ready.<\/strong><br data-start=\"5858\" data-end=\"5861\" \/>\u2705 <strong data-start=\"5863\" data-end=\"5888\">Funding is available.<\/strong><br data-start=\"5888\" data-end=\"5891\" \/>\u2705
