The Public University of Navarre (UPNA) recently hosted the official presentation of the European project RESPIRA<\/strong>, aimed at promoting the revitalization of rural areas through the enhancement of their natural, cultural, and memorial heritage. The project, which will run from 2025 to May 2028 with UPNA participating as a partner, has a total budget of 1.7 million euros<\/strong>, of which 1.3 million<\/strong> are co-financed by ERDF<\/strong> funds. Part of the Interreg SUDOE Programme<\/strong>, it is led by the P\u00f4le M\u00e9tropolitain du Pays de B\u00e9arn<\/strong> (France) and brings together nine partners from France, Spain, and Portugal<\/strong>, along with eighteen associated entities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The project will implement a Strategy for the Valorization of Heritage Identity<\/strong> and a Transnational Action Plan<\/strong>, as well as heritage frameworks, training and awareness activities, and a pilot action<\/strong> in several rural territories. \u201cThese tools will equip public authorities and local stakeholders with methodologies and capacities to strengthen heritage transmission and harness its potential as a strategic resource,\u201d the project team explains.<\/p>\n

UPNA participates in RESPIRA with a budget of \u20ac245,700<\/strong> (\u20ac184,275 ERDF funds) and the collaboration of the Government of Navarre<\/strong>, the Navarre Institute of Memory<\/strong>, and the Council of the Salazar Valley<\/strong>. Specifically, in Navarre, several lines of action will be developed: adaptation of tools to the territory, production of educational and outreach materials, territorial workshops, and development of technological and educational resources, in addition to a pilot project in the Salazar Valley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This pilot project includes two heritage routes enhanced with augmented and virtual reality<\/strong> to showcase different forms of migration \u2014 economic, labor-related, political, traditional, and natural \u2014 that have shaped the valley\u2019s identity. One of them incorporates democratic memory and values related to human rights<\/strong>, while the other focuses on sustainability, local identity, intergenerational perspective, and intercultural dialogue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The presentation event at UPNA featured Professor Alfredo Asi\u00e1in Ansorena<\/strong>, principal investigator of the project at UPNA; Professor Isabel Merino Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>, project communication manager (both from the Department of Human Sciences and Education and the I-COMMUNITAS Institute); Mikel Ozkoidi P\u00e9rez<\/strong>, head of the Section for Ethnological and Intangible Heritage of the Government of Navarre; Jos\u00e9 Miguel Gast\u00f3n Aguas<\/strong>, director of the Navarre Institute of Memory; and two representatives from the Council of the Salazar Valley, Maitane Eslava<\/strong> and Gustavo Goiena<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The main UPNA research group involved in the project is \u201cResearch in Linguistics and Intangible Heritage\u201d<\/strong>, led by Professor of Basque Philology Patxi Salaberri Zaratiegi<\/strong>. The project will be carried out through collaboration among various multidisciplinary working groups<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Depopulation, aging, and loss of dynamism<\/strong><\/p>\n

As highlighted, RESPIRA was created to address the challenges faced by rural territories in the SUDOE area (Southwest Europe)<\/strong>, affected by depopulation, aging, and economic decline. Its objective is to strengthen territorial identity<\/strong> and to turn heritage \u2014 natural, cultural, and memorial \u2014 into a driver of sustainable development, social cohesion, and innovation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

RESPIRA seeks to revitalize participating territories<\/strong> and build a transnational cooperation network<\/strong> that facilitates knowledge transfer, fosters new opportunities, and consolidates a sustainable model for heritage management and transmission.<\/p>\n

The project will conclude with an international dissemination seminar<\/strong>, accompanied by thematic webinars, territorial meetings, and scientific publications. \u201cWith the presentation held at UPNA, RESPIRA officially begins its journey to strengthen the link between community, heritage, and innovation, and to contribute to the sustainable and balanced future of rural areas in the SUDOE space,\u201d noted the project\u2019s research team.<\/p>\n
