PASTONATUR took part in the first event held in Portugal within the framework of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026<\/a>), which on 24 January brought together pastoralists from across the north of the country<\/a> at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragan\u00e7a (IPB).<\/span><\/p>\n

IPB is a leading institution in research on pastoralism and also a founding member of the Centre of Competences for Extensive Pastoralism<\/a>. The CCPE was also represented at this meeting through ADPM, a member of its executive board and one of the partner organisations of the international PASTONATUR project.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event was attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Fernandes, who reaffirmed the Portuguese Government\u2019s recognition of the fundamental role played by pastoralists and the importance of their work for territorial cohesion. In his address, he also announced a \u20ac30 million support package for pastoralism, with the potential to increase the attractiveness of the activity and promote generational renewal in the sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

The PASTONATUR project, funded by the Interreg Sudoe programme, was presented alongside other relevant initiatives for pastoralism to the approximately 130 pastoralists attending the event. The initiative aimed to mark the launch of IYRP 2026, whose objective is to bring together and enhance the pastoral sector, as well as to promote public policies that ensure the sustainability of rangelands and pastoralists.<\/span><\/p>\n
