The meeting enabled the consolidation of technical agreements on methodology, sampling points and sample shipment logistics, while strengthening internal coordination and project visibility.<\/p>\n<p>The session was opened by Thierry Noguer (UPVD), who welcomed participants and introduced Guillaume Cano, an associated partner (PMM). In his presentation, Guillaume Cano shared a practical overview of water control and sanitation management, supported by an explanatory video on the urban water cycle and the local management system.<\/p>\n<p>Next, Juana Mar\u00eda Arellano (UCA), joining online, provided a <strong>general project progress update<\/strong>, thanked the hosts, and recalled recent milestones, including the availability of the <strong>first deliverable<\/strong>, which compiles relevant European directives and criteria for selecting sampling points in the rivers under study. The need to clarify the definition of potential \u201chotspots\u201d and how these fit within the agreed planning was also highlighted.<\/p>\n<h4>Technical work: two groups, one shared goal<\/h4>\n<p>The core of the meeting was organised into <strong>two thematic working groups<\/strong> (microplastics and pharmaceuticals) to advance the <strong>harmonisation of protocols<\/strong> and ensure that all partners apply comparable criteria across Spain, France and Portugal. Miguel Santos (UPORTO) proposed a joint review of the sampling process and facilitated the division into working groups, using a previous protocol as a reference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Microplastics Working Group (Activity 1.2).<\/strong> Key discussions covered campaign planning and operational aspects such as upstream\/downstream points, water volumes and sample types. The group agreed to move forward with a dedicated workshop (ultimately proposed in Lisbon) and to carry out an <strong>intercalibration between laboratories<\/strong> to ensure analytical consistency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pharmaceuticals Working Group (Activity 1.2).<\/strong> The group addressed methodological questions following the roadmap and agreed to build on previously evaluated protocols, incorporating decisions on the sampling scheme, minimum volumes and sample preservation, with particular attention to cross-border logistics.<\/p>\n<h4>Consolidated agreements to launch the sampling campaign<\/h4>\n<p>In the plenary wrap-up, the consortium confirmed a set of operational decisions enabling the next project phase:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sampling dates:<\/strong> <strong>1st campaign in May\u2013June<\/strong> and <strong>2nd in November\u2013December<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>River sampling points:<\/strong> reference distance of <strong>25 m upstream and 25 m downstream<\/strong> of the WWTP discharge for environmental sampling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pharmaceutical analysis:<\/strong> decision to use <strong>passive samplers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecotoxicological tests:<\/strong> agreed volume of <strong>500 mL<\/strong> to be collected and analysed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shipment and preservation:<\/strong> samples to be shipped <strong>frozen<\/strong> and in a <strong>plastic bottle<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Protocol drafting (responsibilities):<\/strong> organic pollutants protocol by Romeu Avo (CMPEAE); WWTP microplastics protocol by Juana Mar\u00eda Arellano (UCA); environmental microplastics protocol by Joana Raimundo (IPMA).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optimisation of sampling points:<\/strong> reduction of river sampling points due to processing capacity and transport constraints, resulting in: <strong>Guadalete (2 WWTPs to be defined), Nivelle (1), Adour (1), T\u00eat (1) and Duero (2)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internal review deadlines:<\/strong> revised protocols to be uploaded to Teams by <strong>30\/01\/2026<\/strong>, with a one-week window until <strong>06\/02\/2026<\/strong> for comments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Communication and compliance: visibility and internal coordination<\/h4>\n<p>During the communication session, <span class=\"fui-Link sef-entity-link ___a29e100 f2hkw1w f3rmtva f1ewtqcl fyind8e f1k6fduh f1w7gpdv f1mo0ibp fjoy568 figsok6 f1s184ao f1mk8lai fnbmjn9 f1o700av f1iuv45f f1cmlufx f9n3di6 f1ids18y fbnuktb fpwtdan fljg2da f1bq4y7d fhgqx19 f1olyrje f1p93eir f1nev41a f1qumt79 f6fr8to fwcc4kg f1r2w2so f2hiwd2 fd8xqtz fmmm8mr fskwzk7 facljwf fg1gtkf\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-focusable=\"true\" data-testid=\"ppl-link\">Eva Sanch\u00eds<\/span> (AITIIP) presented the project\u2019s <strong>communication strategy<\/strong> and showcased key assets already produced: the <strong>brochure<\/strong>, <strong>promotional video<\/strong>, <strong>LinkedIn profile<\/strong>, and <strong>project website<\/strong>.
