The event, organised by the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Madrid (UPM) in collaboration with Canal de Isabel II and Zubigune Fundazioa, took place at the School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering (ETSIAAB) at UPM in Madrid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SudWaMa is a 36-month transnational initiative (June 2025 \u2013 May 2028) led by Zubigune Fundazioa, with a total budget of \u20ac1.699.936,16 (75% ERDF co-funding). Its main goal is to <\/span><b>address challenges related to water efficiency and water quality in institutional buildings across the SUDOE area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Spain, Portugal, Southern France). The Project involves <\/span><b>20 Associated Partners <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from academia, public institutions, NGOs, and SMEs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project involves nine main beneficiaries from the three countries of the SUDOE region: Spain, Portugal and France. It is structured around three key Work Packages (WPs), aligned with the project\u2019s main objectives:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>design a sustainable strategy for circular water management in institutional buildings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promoting water efficiency, water reuse, quality assurance, and behavioural change among users.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>demonstrate the feasibility of circular water solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>greywater, rainwater and wastewater<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in various demonstration settings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>raise awareness and engage users<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through participatory activities, water labs and educational modules on sustainable water management.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the diversity of the project partners, these objectives will be approached with a comprehensive and multidisciplinary vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SUDOE region faces a range of water-related challenges: frequent and prolonged droughts, pollution, and pressure on water resources due to climate change and excessive consumption. Transnational cooperation is crucial because:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It enables faster experimentation: The <\/span><b>diversity of the pilot sites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (different water types: grey, rain, wastewater; various climates and uses) facilitates the testing and scaling-up of treatment processes and monitoring tools.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps <\/span><b>overcome regulatory and cultural barriers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The project will compare regulatory frameworks and address cultural barriers to adopting the circular water economy, learning from the experiences of each region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>promotes policy alignment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Cooperation allows for the alignment of policies, regulations and standards among regions and stakeholders, fostering sustainable water management and climate adaptation solutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>builds sustainable networks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The project will establish networks that support cross-border communication, cooperation, and knowledge exchange.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SudWaMa will implement innovative solutions across four pilot sites located in different parts of the three SUDOE countries. At the <\/span><b>ESTIA Campus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (France), a campus-scale \u201c<\/span><b>Water Smart Grid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d will be implemented to collect, store and manage rainwater for toilet flushing, irrigation and cleaning, using sensors equipped with IoT and AI technologies. The pilot will also explore the use of <\/span><b>dry urinals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to transform urine into fertiliser, and the <\/span><b>creation of wetlands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to store and mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the <\/span><b>University of Coimbra and \u00c1guas de Coimbra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Portugal), the focus will be on <\/span><b>greywater reuse for secondary uses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as garden irrigation and toilet flushing), monitoring water consumption, and implementing <\/span><b>water efficiency measures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as flow reducers and dry urinals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Spain, there will be two pilot sites. <\/span><b>In Madrid, Canal de Isabel II<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will implement <\/span><b>Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to collect rainwater at source, improve its quality and increase infiltration, thereby enhancing urban resilience to extreme rainfall events. <\/span><b>Greywater will also be reused in an institutional building for non-potable purposes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the <\/span><b>Basque Country, BREEN and Zubigune<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be responsible for the fourth pilot site, which <\/span><b>will simulate sustainable wastewater management through biological processes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The treated water, rich in nutrients, will be used for rooftop hydroponic farming, powered by photovoltaic pumping and monitored using IoT technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expected impacts of the project include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduction in potable water consumption and improved water quality<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased urban resilience to extreme weather events<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promotion of the circular economy and behavioural change among users<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redirecting infrastructure investment to urban areas<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SudWaMa begins with momentum, driving a much-needed and urgent shift in how we conceive and manage water in our cities. The commitment of all partners and the wide range of approaches involved promise transformative results that could extend well beyond the SUDOE region.
