The Camino Lebaniego Foundation held the fourth meeting of the Hub or working group of the European ULTREIA-Sudoe project at the premises of Cillorigo de Li\u00e9bana Town Council, continuing the collaborative governance process launched weeks earlier with the aim of boosting the economic and social development of the territories along the Lebaniego Way.<\/p>\n

This fourth meeting, the third of an operational nature following the initial informative session held in Potes, brought together institutional representatives (including the Mayor of Cillorigo de Li\u00e9bana, Jes\u00fas Cuevas, who acted as host; the Mayor of San Vicente de la Barquera, Charo Urquiza; and the mayors of Pesaguero, Enrique Sabar\u00eds, and Cabez\u00f3n de Li\u00e9bana, Jes\u00fas Fuente), local stakeholders, and professionals linked to the Way.<\/p>\n

The Foundation\u2019s director, Pilar G. Bahamonde, opened the session by explaining some practical aspects of the new pilgrim credentials and the Lebannensis certificate, before giving the floor to Valeriano Teja, president of Peregrinos por Cantabria, who briefly presented the work carried out to analyze signage across the different routes of the Lebaniego Way.<\/p>\n

Following the participatory methodology applied in previous meetings, the session then continued with group work dynamics focused on two of the strategic lines included in the ULTREIA-Sudoe Action Plan: cultural heritage and universal accessibility. In the field of cultural heritage, participants analyzed proposals aimed at strengthening knowledge, conservation, and dissemination of heritage resources associated with the Lebaniego Way. Key initiatives discussed included developing a detailed inventory of tangible and intangible heritage in the municipalities along the route, creating local thematic routes, organizing awareness-raising and training activities on heritage conservation, involving citizens in heritage recovery and dissemination processes, and designing guided visit programs to enrich the experience of pilgrims and visitors.<\/p>\n

Regarding universal accessibility, participants worked on different measures aimed at ensuring a more inclusive Way. These included conducting local assessments to identify architectural barriers and opportunities for improvement, carrying out small-scale works and adaptations in infrastructure and facilities, producing accessible information for different user profiles, providing specific staff training for assisting people with disabilities, and promoting initiatives to improve accessibility along the entire route.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, some of the topics addressed in the previous session were also revisited, particularly those related to local development and the pilgrim experience. In this regard, the need to consolidate a stable network for information-sharing and collaboration among the various stakeholders along the Way was highlighted, in order to facilitate communication, coordination, and the dissemination of joint initiatives. Likewise, emphasis was placed on strengthening the promotion of local producers and artisans through the organization of dedicated markets and the creation of an identifying label to showcase products linked to the Way\u2019s territory.<\/p>\n

Another key point of the discussion was the need to identify individuals and organizations in each locality, municipality, or territory that can act as advocates and ambassadors for the Way, helping to promote its values, resources, and development opportunities. To this end, participants agreed to hold a specific meeting in the near future, alongside the regular Hub schedule, to advance concrete measures that will help structure this territorial collaboration network.<\/p>\n

In addition to the implementation of the Hubs, the Ultreia Sudoe project is developing other complementary actions aimed at improving the management of the Way and the experience of pilgrims and visitors. These include installing visitor flow monitoring systems at different points along the route to obtain reliable data on foot traffic, as well as creating \u201cStops along the Way\u201d (Paradas en el Camino)\u2014physical and virtual spaces for welcome, rest, and information that also serve as meeting points with the local population and showcases for local products and services, thereby contributing to local economic development and sustainability.<\/p>\n

All these actions are part of the European ULTREIA-Sudoe project, developed within the Interreg Sudoe program, whose objective is to revitalize inland tourism and promote rural development in the territories crossed by the Camino de Santiago routes, fostering shared strategies among regions of southwestern Europe. Through this initiative, the Camino Lebaniego Foundation reinforces its commitment to a more coordinated, innovative, and sustainable management of the Way, promoting public-private collaboration as a key tool to strengthen local economies and social cohesion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ultreia-Sudoe Project<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

The Ultreia Sudoe project is being developed \u05d1\u05de\u05e1\u05d2\u05e8\u05ea the European Interreg Sudoe programme. Alongside the Spanish entities (Camino Lebaniego Foundation, Santa Mar\u00eda la Real Foundation, Association of Municipalities of the French Way of St. James, Amica, and S.A. de Xesti\u00f3n do Plan Xacobeo), it also involves the Agence Fran\u00e7aise des Chemins de Compostelle in France, the Portuguese municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, and the Faculty of Science and Technology of NOVA University Lisbon. In this context, it is worth noting that the Camino Lebaniego Foundation is also an active member of the European Federation of the Ways of St. James.<\/p>\n

ULTREIA-Sudoe, with a total budget of \u20ac1,407,300 distributed among the eight partners and co-financed at 75% by the Interreg Sudoe programme, will run until December 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
