The Museo das Peregrinaci\u00f3ns e de Santiago<\/strong> will host an international meeting on 19 and 20 November 2026<\/strong> to present the results of the Interreg Sudoe Ultreia_Sudoe<\/strong> project and advance the development of a transnational management model for the Ways of St. James<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

In recent years, the Ways of St. James have become a strategic tool for the social, economic and cultural revitalisation of numerous rural territories across south-west Europe. To share experiences, present project outcomes and strengthen cooperation between public administrations, organisations and local stakeholders, the Ultreia_Sudoe International Symposium: A Transnational Management Model for the Ways of St. James<\/strong> will take place in Santiago de Compostela<\/strong> on 19 and 20 November 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The event, to be held at the Museo das Peregrinaci\u00f3ns e de Santiago<\/strong>, will showcase the main conclusions and tools developed within the framework of the Interreg Sudoe Ultreia_Sudoe<\/strong> project, an initiative that promotes the Ways of St. James as drivers of sustainable development and territorial cohesion.<\/p>\n

The Ways of St. James as a Driver of Rural Development<\/h2>\n

The territories crossed by the different pilgrimage routes share a number of common challenges, including depopulation, demographic ageing and the need to create new economic opportunities. In response to these challenges, the Ultreia_Sudoe<\/strong> project seeks to demonstrate the potential of the Ways of St. James as structuring elements capable of stimulating economic activity, fostering territorial cooperation and improving the quality of life of those living in these areas.<\/p>\n

Experience gained in recent years has shown that the presence of the pilgrimage routes has helped retain population, generate services and strengthen the identity of many rural municipalities. The challenge now is to move towards more coordinated management models that make it possible to fully harness their potential as tools for local development.<\/p>\n

Practical Results for Shared Management<\/h2>\n

The symposium programme will focus on presenting concrete solutions developed by the project partners. Key topics include the role of the Ways of St. James as a driver of economic development based on cooperation among local stakeholders, the application of digital transformation to the pilgrim and visitor experience, and the creation of innovative tools to enhance the management and visibility of rural territories.<\/p>\n

One of the project\u2019s main achievements is the development of shared information systems based on geolocated data. These tools are designed to provide useful information for pilgrims, tourists and local communities alike, supporting better planning of resources and services along the pilgrimage routes.<\/p>\n

The project also encourages the creation of collaborative spaces bringing together public administrations, associations, cultural organisations, universities and economic stakeholders, based on the belief that cooperation is essential to ensuring the future of both the pilgrimage routes and the territories they cross.<\/p>\n

A Project with a European Dimension<\/h2>\n

Ultreia_Sudoe<\/strong> brings together organisations from Spain, France and Portugal<\/strong> committed to the conservation, promotion and sustainable management of the Ways of St. James. Partners include the Association of Municipalities on the Way of St. James<\/strong>, the Santa Mar\u00eda la Real Foundation<\/strong>, the Camino Lebaniego Foundation<\/strong>, Amica Association<\/strong>, the French Agency for the Ways of St. James<\/strong>, NOVA University Lisbon<\/strong>, the Municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar<\/strong>, and several Galician institutions linked to the Jacobean heritage.<\/p>\n

The project\u2019s outcomes are intended to become a transferable model for other European territories, demonstrating how the combination of cultural heritage, digital innovation, sustainability and citizen participation can generate new opportunities for rural development.<\/p>\n

The Ultreia_Sudoe International Symposium<\/strong> will therefore provide an opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen partnerships and continue building a common vision of the Ways of St. James as a strategic resource for the future of rural areas in south-west Europe.<\/p>\n
