Developed under the REMAIN project and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg Sudoe Programme, it delivers practical guidelines to embed circular economy principles from the earliest product design phase, in line with the European Union\u2019s sustainability regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The guide stems from a central premise: extending the lifecycle of products begins the moment they are conceived. In footwear and textiles, ecodesign helps prevent waste generation, facilitates repair, reconditioning, and remanufacturing, and consequently preserves product value over time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seven themes to rethink product design: ecodesign for remanufacturing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The full version of the guide is structured into seven sections, addressing diverse dimensions of ecodesign and remanufacturing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Introduction to the project and guide purpose<\/strong>, presenting REMAIN and the role of ecodesign in extending footwear and textile durability;<\/li>\n<li><strong>The product lifecycle<\/strong>, focusing on the shift from a linear model to a circular framework based on prevention, repair, and remanufacturing;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restoration processes<\/strong>, distinguishing between repair, reconditioning, and remanufacturing;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regulatory framework<\/strong>, including ecodesign standards, the Digital Product Passport (DPP), and emerging sustainability reporting requirements;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Building the future of remanufacturing<\/strong>, identifying existing market barriers and the imperative of designing with disassembly, recovery, and reuse in mind;<\/li>\n<li><strong>The six principles of ecodesign for remanufacturing<\/strong>, offering technical guidelines on durability, disassembly, modularity, materials, accessibility, and traceability;<\/li>\n<li><strong>From repair to ecodesign<\/strong>, drawing on real case studies to transform recurring design flaws into proactive prevention strategies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>From problem to solution: ecodesign in practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One case study detailed in the summary version demonstrates how a design flaw can drastically curtail an article\u2019s operational lifespan.<\/p>\n<p>This is evident in polyurethane (PU) soles which, owing to chemical material degradation over time, can cause premature disposal of otherwise high-quality footwear.
