A2.1, A2.2, and A2.3 consist of the pilot-scale testing of a prevention, early detection, and remediation solution, respectively. As described above, these solutions are not independent of each other, but rather are structured as a comprehensive methodology with multiple hierarchically ordered layers. Thus, prevention is the most desirable solution (level 1) because it does not trigger negative environmental consequences, nor is the cost of corrective measures high. Due to the need to tolerate a certain level of risk from the coexistence of other uses of water resources, such as agricultural activities, industrial uses, or domestic contributions, prevention may not be sufficient, and it may be necessary to move to early detection (level 2). In this case, the aim is to detect a cyanobacterial bloom episode when it is still very incipient and, therefore, the environmental consequences and the cost of reversing the situation are still limited. When the first two types of solutions could not be applied, as a less desirable solution, low-cost remediation adapted to the climate and vegetation of the territory would come into play (level 3).<\/p>\n
The prevention solution will be developed by CIDE-CSIC, ACMG, IDAEA-CSIC, FCUP, and PARALAB and will be tested in all study areas mentioned in A1.1. The early detection solution will be developed by USAL through a WebGIS tool and tested at pilot scale in several reservoirs of the Guadalquivir basin, in Lake Raho (Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales), and in the Aguieira and Ribeiradio reservoirs in Portugal. Finally, the remediation solution will be tested at pilot scale in the “lac de plaisance de PUYMIROL” (Lot-et-Garonne).<\/p>\n
