Recent events, such as those in April 2022, caused significant losses in various production areas, highlighting the sector\u2019s vulnerability and the need to improve existing protection systems.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, protection systems based on water application have proven to be the most effective, as they take advantage of the heat released during freezing. Among these solutions, micro-sprinkling represents a technological advancement that maintains a high level of protection while significantly reducing water and energy consumption.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<section>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Pilot trial<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The project is structured around a pilot trial carried out in two representative locations in the fruit-growing area of Lleida:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mollerussa:<\/strong> experimental pear orchard under intensive system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gimenells:<\/strong> commercial nectarine orchard trained in vase system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In these plots, different frost protection systems have been installed to compare their performance under real field conditions. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conventional high-flow sprinklers.<\/li>\n<li>Low-flow micro-sprinklers.<\/li>\n<li>Pulsed micro-sprinkling systems.<\/li>\n<li>Systems with localized water distribution (strip application) adapted to intensive orchards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-67505 alignnone aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/interreg-sudoe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-05-29-133121-300x143.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interreg-sudoe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-05-29-133121-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interreg-sudoe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-05-29-133121.jpg 635w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-67504 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/interreg-sudoe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-05-29-133152-300x103.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interreg-sudoe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-05-29-133152-300x103.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interreg-sudoe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-05-29-133152.jpg 677w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These systems operate with different water application rates, allowing their efficiency to be assessed under various agronomic conditions.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<section>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Actions and impact<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Several actions have been carried out in the pilot plots for the implementation and evaluation of frost protection systems, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Installation of the water distribution network (pipes, connections and fixing systems).<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of different types of micro-sprinklers adapted to each crop and planting layout.<\/li>\n<li>Start-up of the pumping and automation system.<\/li>\n<li>Execution of associated civil works, such as trench digging and infrastructure assembly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A monitoring system has also been implemented to analyse the thermal behaviour of the crop during frost events and evaluate the performance of the different solutions under real field conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This experience will allow:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Evaluating the effectiveness of micro-sprinkling systems under real conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Reducing the risk of economic losses associated with frost.<\/li>\n<li>Generating technical knowledge transferable to the agricultural sector.<\/li>\n<li>Promoting the adoption of more efficient solutions in terms of water and energy use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, the results will contribute to their application in other regions of the Sudoe area, promoting climate change adaptation strategies based on sustainable and resilient technologies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The pilot trial developed in Lleida (Mollerussa and Gimenells) evaluates micro-sprinkler systems for frost protection in fruit crops.
