This situation increases plant vulnerability to spring frosts, which occur at critical growth stages and can cause losses of up to 100% in productions such as orchards or vineyards.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In the SUDOE area, many agricultural systems lack effective solutions to address this risk. Existing techniques are often costly, energy-intensive, or dependent on water use. In this context, the Interreg An\u2011Gel SUDOE project promotes the testing of innovative, sustainable, and transferable solutions, as well as the development of early warning systems to enhance the resilience of the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Pilot trial<\/span><\/h4>\n<div>The pilot trial is carried out in an apricot orchard under real production conditions, allowing the practical applicability of the tested solutions to be assessed. The plot covers approximately one hectare and includes different apricot varieties.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>The main objective of the pilot is to analyze how soil moisture and ground cover management influence the intensity of spring frosts. To this end, an experimental setup has been designed based on the comparison of two soil management approaches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Modality 1 (wet soil)<\/strong>: the soil is irrigated prior to frost events, maintaining it close to field capacity. This condition promotes heat accumulation and release during the night, which can reduce the impact of low temperatures. Ground cover is managed through mowing between rows and mechanical weeding along the crop row.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modality 2 (dry soil)<\/strong>: the same vegetation management practices are maintained, but without prior irrigation before frost events. This modality serves as a reference to assess the specific effect of soil moisture on the thermal behavior of the orchard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-67507\" src=\"https:\/\/interreg-sudoe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-05-29-133729-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/interreg-sudoe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-05-29-133729-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/interreg-sudoe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2026-05-29-133729.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The trial includes a monitoring system with weather stations and soil probes that record variables such as temperature, humidity, wind, and radiation, as well as soil temperature and moisture up to 60 cm depth. This system is installed under homogeneous conditions to ensure data comparability and to reliably assess the influence of the factors studied.<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Actions and impact<\/span><\/h4>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>The actions carried out within the pilot focus on testing soil management strategies as passive solutions against frost, avoiding the use of resource-intensive techniques. In addition, continuous monitoring of climatic and soil conditions is performed, along with the analysis of the collected data.<\/p>\n<p>The expected impact is the identification of effective, sustainable, and low-cost agronomic practices to reduce damage caused by spring frosts. These solutions can be transferred to other farmers and territories, contributing to strengthening the resilience of the agricultural sector to climate change.
