Consequently, several local manufacturers and recyclers joined forces in 2024 to create the RECYCLocal Textiles cooperative and develop a regional industrial unit dedicated to valorizing these materials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The challenges are both environmental and economic: preventing textiles unsuitable for reuse from being incinerated or sent to landfills, while simultaneously producing locally sourced secondary raw materials\u2014with controlled composition, origin, and quality\u2014to supply new recycling chains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>PILOT OBJECTIVE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The pilot project aims to:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>develop a local, industrial-scale solution for sorting and recovering textile waste<\/li>\n<li>transform non-reusable textiles into secondary raw materials tailored to recyclers&#8217; needs<\/li>\n<li>ensure material flow traceability and foster recovery within circular value chains<\/li>\n<li>achieve a 70% recovery rate for the textiles received.<\/li>\n<li>In the long term, the project also seeks to gradually increase the facility&#8217;s processing capacity to contribute to the development of a genuine regional textile recycling sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>PROPOSED SOLUTION \/ INNOVATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">RECYCLocal Textiles operates an industrial facility equipped with two automated sorting lines that categorize textiles according to recyclers&#8217; requirements. Processed streams may include post-consumer textiles, workwear, technical textiles, or production offcuts. Upon arrival, materials are weighed to ensure traceability. When necessary, a manual pre-sorting stage is carried out to remove reusable textiles and items that clearly cannot be recovered.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The textiles are then fed into the sorting lines. Sorting categories are programmed to align with the specifications of the recyclers receiving the materials.\u00a0Certain fractions undergo additional preparation\u2014specifically, the removal of rigid components (such as buttons or zippers) that could interfere with the recycling process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The innovation lies not only in the sorting technology but also in the creation of a local industrial value chain that spans from waste identification and sorting to the production and marketing of secondary raw materials tailored to the needs of specific recyclers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>MAIN ACTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Refurbishment and adaptation of the industrial facility.<\/li>\n<li>Installation and commissioning of two automated sorting lines.<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of a traceability and flow reporting system.<\/li>\n<li>Reception, weighing, and characterization of various textile streams.<\/li>\n<li>Manual pre-sorting when necessary.<\/li>\n<li>Automated sorting based on recyclers&#8217; categories and specifications.<\/li>\n<li>Preparation of materials for recycling, particularly through bale opening.<\/li>\n<li>Development of commercial outlets for the secondary raw materials produced.<\/li>\n<li>Recruitment and progressive training of local sorting operators.<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring of unit performance: tonnages received, sorted, and re-sorted; materials sold; workforce; and economic indicators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>EXPECTED RESULTS \/ IMPACT<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Environmental: The pilot project diverts textiles\u2014for which no reuse solution exists\u2014away from incineration or landfill, redirecting them toward material recovery solutions. The goal is to recover 70% of the volumes received. The remaining 30% consists of so-called &#8220;orphan&#8221; textiles, for which there is currently no recycling solution.<\/li>\n<li>Economic: RECYCLocal helps structure a regional textile recycling value chain and ensures industrial access to secondary raw materials of known origin, composition, and quality. The model relies primarily on the sale of these materials, the provision of services to commercial textile waste generators, and support from the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) sector.<\/li>\n<li>Social: The project involves the integration and training of 10 locally hired sorting operators during the first year, with the aim of gradually expanding the workforce. The report also highlights the high number of local applications and the successful integration of the hired staff.<\/li>\n<li>Territorial: The project brings together stakeholders from various stages of the textile value chain within a single cooperative and establishes concrete links between material holders, sorting operators, recyclers, and industrial users of recycled materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>KEY INDICATORS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2026 Results \/ Indicators:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">1,000 tonnes of textiles processed in 2026;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">70% recovery rate achieved;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">2 automated sorting lines installed;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">8 founding members representing different stages of the textile value chain;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u20ac2.2 million in industrial investment;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Goal to integrate and train 10 sorting operators in the first year.
