Description

There is a need to assess the effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BMMP) in forest ecosystems that maintain the biodiversity of Sudoe ecosystems ─ i.e., is BMP in certified Sudoe forests and woodlands (e.g., intensively managed eucalyptus plantations or less intensively managed evergreen oak woodlands) ─ contributing to the ecological integrity of these systems and to the conservation of Sudoe biodiversity. Governments are providing public funding supporting the costs of certification. Thus, monitoring of forest certification schemes is crucial to assess their effectiveness and justify invested public money.

Expected results

BMP Sudoe project aims to assess the conservation value of different Mediterranean forestry ecosystems under BMP (certified areas), including plantations and woodlands, and to propose common tools of monitoring, assessment, and restoration of biodiversity, in order to adopt a common and shared strategy for the conservation of terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity in Mediterranean forestry areas.
