Descripción

The purposes of this project consist, fundamentally, in producing empirical evidences, theoretical contributions and recommendations for the coastal management on the subject of maritime tourism, namely in its yacht cruising variety in Europe. It is a study on the lifestyle, values and behaviours of the mid and long term cruisers that for one reason or another stay in the harbours and moorings in the Mediterranean. A particular attention will be given to those mooring in environmental sensible or protected areas such as Natural Parks. Two of the original aspects of this project are, on one hand, that none of the main researches on ocean cruising was held in Europe, nor focused on European yacht sailor’s lifestyle. On the other hand, it proposes to study yacht cruising within the ‘lifestyle mobilities’ paradigm which has never been done until now.

Taking this in to consideration, our broad research problems are the following: What motivates people to go cruising and to spend great periods of time at sea? What is, for them, the meaning of this choice? What are the main characteristics of this ‘lifestyle mobility’? What is the nature of the relationships between foreign yacht cruisers and local cultures? What’s their kind of interaction with nature and the environment? What are their main needs in terms of inshore logistics and technical support? What are their social representations of the idea of ‘border’ (Namely the European political and geographical borders)?

Maritime tourism, as is well known, affects and promotes the development of numerous service business activities that are directly or indirectly related to the boaters needs. This kind of tourism may then contribute substantially to socio-economic development, to the increase of the standards of living of the locals and to the preservation of the coastal ecosystems, under the condition that it is established on scientifically based development factors. Besides its undeniable empirical and theoretical interest in the subject of contemporary mobilities and lifestyles, this project will try also to produce information and knowledge about the yacht cruiser’s way of life that may be applied within the scope of public policies and marketing strategies, not only in what concerns sustainable maritime tourism development policies but also in what concerns the leveraging of the image of maritime tourism destinations.
