My research focuses on the study of the effect of aging on mesenchymal stem cells in a common pathological model associated with age, such as OA, and a pathological model of accelerated aging, such as Hutchinton-Gilford progeria syndrome.

I have experience leading research projects nationwide on Combination of cell therapies for the repair of cartilage lesions (PI11 / 02799). My group focuses on the study of the potential of mesenchymal stem cells, at an immunological and regenerative level, for their possible application in cell therapy, including the management of new omic techniques (iTRAQ and NGS), to obtain massive proteomic and genomic data , which have been published in the Scientific Reports of the online group Nature (Fafián-Labora ... MC Arufe, SciRep 2015 and 2017). We have performed cell transplants studying migration and cell viability in addition to the possible immune response in animal models (Front. Immunol., November 6, 2017 and PlosOne, November 15, 2017). We also have extensive experience in differentiation techniques towards chondrocytes of different subpopulations of adult stem cells of the synovial membrane (Arufe MC, J Cell Biochem. 2010; Arufe MC, J Cell Biochem. 2009) or human umbilical cord stroma ( Fernández-Pernas ... Arufe MC, Cell Biochem. 2016; Arufe MC, Stem Cells Dev. 2010) and its proteomic study using DIGE on how they differentiate into cells similar to functional chondrocytes (De la Fuente ... MC Arufe MCP . 2012). We have established a model of arthritic chondrocyte-like cells as an in vitro model of aging (Mateos J ... Arufe MC, Stem Cell Res. 2013) from human mesenchymal stem cells derived from the genetically modified umbilical cord using lentiviruses. We also have extensive experience in the field of micro-RNAs as evidenced by our participation in the project subsidized by the Xunta de Galicia "MicroRNA, obesity and metabolic health: mechanistic and translational studies" (EM2013 / 011) for a better development of this project, we established a collaboration with Dr. van der Pol's group in his laboratory at the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, carrying out specific experiments related to exosomes and their ability to transport response-related micro-RNA immune in mesenchymal stem cells (Fafián -Labora ... MC Arufe, SciRep 2017).
