This fourth edition provides an overview of the ThermEcoWat project in 2026, highlighting a rich programme of activities, from scientific milestones and knowledge-sharing initiatives to concrete commitments from the pilot territories. It also looks ahead to the project’s key deliverables (the knowledge base, decision-support tool and White Paper) which will help shape its legacy in the years to come. The consortium partners continue their joint efforts to support the stronger adaptation of thermal spa territories to climate change.

Thanks to active cooperation between France, Spain and Portugal, this momentum is translating into tangible results: shared knowledge tools, local agreements for sustainable management, and awareness-raising activities targeting both the general public and decision-makers.

ThermEcoWat

Where does the project stand in 2026?

Launched in January 2024 for a three-year period and led by Thermauvergne, ThermEcoWat is entering its decision-making phase in 2026.

Following the assessment of resources across the three pilot sites (Chaudes-Aigues, Caldes de Montbui and São Pedro do Sul) the project is now bringing together hydrogeological, climate and socio-economic data to prioritise adaptation measures.

The final year will focus on consolidating and capitalising on the project’s results, including the knowledge base, White Paper and adaptation plans, ahead of its completion at the end of 2026.

ThermEcoWat reaches a key milestone

in Madrid

Pilot sites present their first adaptation action plans

From 19 to 21 May 2026, ThermEcoWat brought its partners together in Madrid for its fourth and final Transnational Workshop, hosted by CN IGME-CSIC. The three pilot sites (São Pedro do Sul, Caldes de Montbui and Chaudes-Aigues) presented initial versions of their Action and Adaptation Plans, supported by the ThermEcoWat Knowledge Graph. This workshop marks the conclusion of the transnational cycle and sets the stage for the project’s White Paper, ahead of the final event in Brussels.

ThermEcoWat first motion design

video now available

ThermEcoWat now has a new communication and dissemination tool with the launch of its first motion design video. Produced in close collaboration with the project partners, the video presents the project’s objectives, methodology and initial results in support of the adaptation of thermal spa territories to climate change, highlighting the work carried out in France, Spain and Portugal. It will now support the project’s dissemination activities and efforts to raise awareness of the climate challenges facing thermal spa territories.

on thermal water management within the framework of ThermEcoWat

The City Council of Caldes de Montbui and thermal operators Grup Termes Victòria and Grup Broquetas have signed an agreement to improve the management and distribution of the town’s thermal waters. The agreement defines the responsibilities of each operator, safeguards public uses — including fountains and the Santa Susanna Residence — and establishes a joint management committee. Supported by the studies carried out as part of the ThermEcoWat project, this initiative strengthens the sustainable management of this resource in the face of climate change.

ThermEcoWat project presentation

at the European Geosciences Union by BRGM

BRGM presented a scientific poster on ThermEcoWat at the 2026 General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU26) in Vienna on 8 May 2026. Entitled “Towards Better Adaptation of Thermal Spa Territories to Climate Change”, the poster presents the project’s participatory methodology: assessing the pilot sites, analysing pressures on thermal water resources and identifying sustainable solutions that can be replicated across Europe.

On 21 and 22 April 2026, Caldes de Montbui hosted a meeting of the Association of Catalan Thermal Spa Towns, highlighting the strategic role of ThermEcoWat. As one of the project’s pilot sites, the municipality presented its progress, including improved monitoring, hydrogeological studies, energy audits and new strategies for the sustainable use of thermal resources. The ICGC (the Catalan Institute of Cartography and Geological Survey) also presented an overview of the geology and legal framework governing thermal waters in Catalonia.

What ThermEcoWat aims to leave to thermal spa towns

The final phase of ThermEcoWat aims to turn three years of work into a transferable methodology. A Common Knowledge Base and a Knowledge Graph will structure the heterogeneous data collected across thermal spa territories, providing the foundation for the project’s decision-support tool, which is being tested at the pilot sites. Designed as a methodological guide, the White Paper will support operators, local authorities and decision-makers from the initial assessment through to the development of adaptation plans, helping them make more robust decisions in the face of climate uncertainty.
