The EU has reached a major achievement with the establishment of the NATURA 2000 network, but states that attention should now turn towards the management of the sites that might involve appropriate management plans and other measures, which correspond to the ecological requirements of the natural habitat types and the species of Community interest. Although NATURA 2000 sites are quite diverse and play a significant role in what concerns environmental resources preservation and ecosystems’ services they are subject to considerable natural risks, as climate or changes in resources availability (resources’ shortage or deterioration) and policy changes.

According to the EU nature directives the conservation objectives should be met while taking account of economic, social, cultural, regional and recreational requirements. It is for the Member States to establish the most appropriate methods and instruments for implementing the directives and for achieving the conservation objectives of NATURA 2000 sites.

Society hopes that these areas can play their role on semi-natural habitats and landscape’s creation and maintenance, which house a huge richness in what concerns biodiversity and, additionally, can contribute to maintain viable rural communities. The NATURA 2000 sites are expected to contribute to protect and conserve the soil, promote the utilization and sustainable management of water and conserve and promote the biodiversity; the changes of the last decades, in what concerns land use and cultural practices were inextricably associated to negative impacts in what concerns water, biodiversity, soils, air and habitats. And to these negative effects we have to sum the abandonment of marginal areas’ farms, conducted by economical and social factors and the climate change.

For this reason, the initiative propose an integrated model in which a responsible valorisation and exploitation of available local resources (human, energetic, cultural, environmental, etc.) is the structural basis for sustainable development, resilience increasing and consequent melioration of the economical level. Further than the advantages presented before, the implementation is expected to add value not only on environmental benefit (decrease of CO2 emissions) but also economic and social return, comfort and sustainability on basic services, new markets and technology based enterprises creation, stimulate reproducibility and increase resilience.

Perfil Beneficiario:

  • We are looking for french partners, namely someone that can help us in the social agents characterization. The social agents linked with these Natura 2000 areas are different and have different perspectives to not only in what concerns their development, but also on the development of their capacity to produce commodities and non-commodities. For the characterization of these social agents we purpose the use of survey/enquiry to define what they think about these areas and their development, the promotion of focus groups discussions and the use of background secondary data. We would like a french partner that could help us with the first two and also a territorial french partner that is responsible for the management of Natura 2000 sites.

Resultados Esperados:

The main result of this project will be a NATURA 2000 sites’ management model that, using the knowledge of former research, namely statistical data, biodiversity data, ecosystem services provided, etc., can provide end-users (stakeholders, administration and management planning and policy makers) a useful tool
