The aim of this project is the development of a digital endovascular surgery simulator which allows for planning an operation for a dedicated patient. The simulator is based on a haptic interface which generates the perceived forces during the operation. The field of application concerns mainly the deployment of aortic endoprothesis (stent-graft) and aortic valve (TAVI) by ascending aorta insertion.

The major challenge of this project is to model and generate the effort on the surgeon’s hand. During an operation, this force is linked to the tissue-instrument interaction along the catheter. The setting of the numerical simulator with regards to the clinical case is based on medical imaging. However, preliminary work for generic modeling of the efforts felt by the surgeon depending on the aortic route should be achieved to recreate it by using the haptic interface. The model must be light enough to be calculated in real time in order to generate no latency on the simulator. The model parameters obtained experimentally should be identified via a protocol defined (empirical adjustment following the felt, measurement campaign …).

This project represents the first step in deploying a flexible simulator catheterization operation having a low cost for the training of future surgeons but also for the planning of the various interventions.
