Green Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods for Resilience, Inclusion, and Social Economy. An integrated, place-based approach to reduce emissions, promote social inclusion and green job creation, and enhance urban biodiversity in Southwestern Europe.

Challenge: Cities are responsible for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions, and urbanisation is expected to continue to grow in Southwestern Europe. At the same time, urban environments in this area are highly exposed to rising climate change related risks. The challenge is to reduce urban emissions while fostering social inclusion, making sure that the green transition is also a just transition, and enhancing urban resilience by expanding and connecting the green infrastructure and improving biodiversity.

Objectives: The overall objective of GreenSUNRISE is to contribute to the transition towards a low-carbon and more sustainable society in Southwestern Europe by developing and implementing an integrated approach to transform existing urban areas into eco-sustainable neighbourhoods. The proposed project aims to reach this goal by integrating different domains of emissions, including transportation, building rehabilitation, and waste management. The project seeks to advance towards a just and inclusive transition, generating employment opportunities for vulnerable groups, while improving urban biodiversity through renaturalization.

Specific objectives include:

1. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas, especially in the transport and building sectors.

2. Promote social inclusion and job creation linked to the green transition, with a focus on vulnerable groups.

3. Enhance urban biodiversity, improving and expanding green infrastructure, and regreening urban spaces.

GreenSUNRISE will adopt a coproduction-based approach that ensures the involvement of all relevant actors in the public and private sectors, as well as civil society.

Expected results: GreenSUNRISE is expected to contribute to the achievement of the following results:

1. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution levels in the pilot neighbourhoods

2. Modal shift, increasing the percentage of trips made by sustainable modes of transportation (walking, cycling, public transport)

3. Creation of new jobs linked to the green transition, with a focus on vulnerable groups.

4. Increasing the number of green corridors connecting existing green spaces in the pilot neighbourhoods.

5. Increasing the total area of green infrastructure in the pilot neighbourhoods, inluding green roofs, green walls, rain gardens, etc.

6. Potential replication of the project model in other cities and neighbourhoods, reaching a larger scale and contributing to the transition towards a low-carbon and sustainable society at a European level.
