The vernacular landscapes of periurban farming in small towns are threatened by the decay of traditional practices, reduced economic revenue and lack of access to market circuits. They nevertheless constitute an area of opportunity for the development of sustainable farming, short supply chains, and raising the profile of small rural towns as leisure and cultural destinations.

The Project aims to design and pilot strategies based the functional sustainability of periurban farming landscapes in natural areas, towards their revitalisation and preservation. Maintenance or the restitution of the original use must be a priority in the recovery of these spaces. The project therefore will devise operative means to ensuring the economic sustainability of vernacular farming landscapes in order to improve their profitability, to contribute to the upkeep of agrosystems, their biodiversity and their value as spaces available for public enjoyment and as cultural heritage. We intend to ‘reverse the nowadays prevailingly negative implications of the proximity to the urban, into an element of opportunity, within the frame of a participatory management of the territory’ (Mata Olmo, R., Yacamán, C., 2016).

- Heritagisation and promotion of the identities of the territories: education, engagement, interpretive routes…

- Integration of nature preservation and productive activities: criteria for ecological production, support to autochthonous fruits and vegetables species, training…

- Economic (re-) activation: short-supply chains, ecological taxation, support to compatible uses such as tourism…

- Social and political commitment and governance models: for instance the agreement on landscape charts, land trust schemes, agrarian parks, planning for protection measures
