A Day of Science with NEWPOWER – EU Green Week

A Day of Science with NEWPOWER – European Green Week in Lleida
Open event co-organised by the University of Lleida, the University of Zaragoza, Ingredalia and Recoop, as part of the NEWPOWER project, co-funded by the Interreg Sudoe programme.

As part of the European Green Week, A Day of Science with NEWPOWER offers a morning of outreach activities open to the general public, with the aim of showing how science and sustainability can give new value to agricultural residues.

The event begins with a visit to the laboratories at the Parc Agrobiotech, led by the University of Lleida. Participants will see how plant residues — such as branches, flowers, or leaves — arrive at the lab and learn about the processes used to extract their most valuable compounds. The classification of these residues will also be explained, along with how this classification guides their potential uses.

Next, the University of Zaragoza will present how the extracts obtained from these residues are analysed. The session will explore the types of properties found in plant materials and how they are studied, including antioxidant and therapeutic properties, among others.

Finally, the company Ingredalia will showcase real examples of products developed from plant-based residues. This part will demonstrate how materials usually considered waste can be transformed into valuable ingredients for sectors such as food, supplements, fertilizers, and cosmetics.

A Day of Science with NEWPOWER is an invitation to discover, from Lleida, how agricultural residues can become valuable resources through research, collaboration, and a commitment to sustainability.
