GestEAUr launches its pilot phase in Fontiveros to study and restore the La Moraña aquifers

The Provincial Council of Ávila, in collaboration with the University of Salamanca and the Fontiveros Town Council, is leading an initiative that seeks innovative and sustainable solutions for water management in rural areas.

The town of Fontiveros, in the province of Ávila, has become a central hub in the fight against aquifer scarcity and pollution in the La Moraña region, thanks to the European project GestEAUr: Sustainable and Digitized Water Management in Rural Areas of the SUDOE Space.

This initiative, funded by European programs and spanning three years (2024–2026), aims to strengthen water resilience in rural areas across southwestern Europe. It promotes the reuse of treated water to recharge aquifers, and the development of low-cost technologies and digital tools to improve the management of the entire water cycle.

🔹 An innovative infiltration system will be launched in Fontiveros as a pilot experience to treat and reuse regenerated water, thereby reducing pressure on water resources and improving the quality of groundwater.

🔹 The project also includes a preliminary socio-economic, environmental, and territorial analysis carried out by the Provincial Council, aimed at identifying the impacts on the aquifer and designing a more effective water governance plan.

🔹 From the University of Salamanca, Professor José Luis Molina and his research team are coordinating the technical and scientific study, including the administrative procedures and permits required to implement the pilot.

This action is part of a joint strategy among nine entities from Spain, France, and Portugal, united under the common goal of digitizing, optimizing, and naturalizing water use in rural environments, fostering territorial cooperation and the responsible use of such a vital resource.

🌿 A European Vision for a More Sustainable Future

The program emphasizes the importance of implementing nature-based solutions and building new forms of collaboration among local, institutional, and scientific stakeholders. As the Provincial Council reminds us, “Water is a common good that knows no borders.”
