GENEUS: improving the care pathway in neurosurgery for older patients in the SUDOE space

The Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Toulouse welcomed the European partners of the GENEUS project for the kick-off meeting of this innovative initiative dedicated to improving neurosurgical care for older people.

Clear and ambitious objectives

In the SUDOE space, the rapid aging of the population represents a major challenge for health systems. In neurosurgery, nearly 50% of hospitalized patients are over 65 years old, often with complex pathologies requiring specific management.
GENEUS aims to meet this challenge by rethinking the care pathway in order to guarantee equal access to quality care for all.

Thus, the project intends to:
• articulate geriatric and neurosurgical expertise,
• develop an integrated care pathway adapted to the needs of elderly patients,
• strengthen transnational cooperation between health institutions,
• propose an operational toolbox to improve the quality, coordination and continuity of care.

A dynamic already launched

The project is coordinated by the CHU of Toulouse, with the participation of:
• CHU of Limoges, Neuroscience Pole – Head – Neck – Bones
• Navarrabiomed – Fundación Miguel Servet
• Institute of Sanitary and Biomedical Research of Alicante
• Fundación Pública Galega de Investigación Biomédica Galicia Sur
• Choice Local of Santa Maria
• Hospital CUF Øtas, S.A.

The meeting in Toulouse allowed the partners to share their expertise, identify the needs of elderly patients in neurosurgery and plan the first concrete actions, which will start before the end of the year.

The GENEUS project marks a decisive step in the organization of neurosurgical care for elderly people in South-West Europe. Through cooperation and innovation, we aim to build a model of care that is more equitable, more coordinated and more humane,” says Pr. Eric Schmidt, neurosurgeon and project coordinator at the CHU of Toulouse.

About GENEUS
GENEUS is a transnational project co-funded under the Interreg SUDOE programme, which brings together seven health and research institutions in France, Spain and Portugal. Its ambition is to develop an innovative and reproducible care model to improve the quality of life of elderly patients requiring neurosurgical management.
