As part of the I-ReWater Interreg Sudoe project, we are designing the ‘Strategy for the Use of Regenerated Water in Irrigation for the SUDOE area’. This planning is crucial in order to safely and reliably address the process of incorporating water resources in a sustainable manner with the acceptance of the social fabric.

The Strategy working group, led by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), has considered the inclusion of four fundamental aspects for the development of comprehensive and cross-cutting work: governance, financial sustainability, social aspects and risk management.

To this end, the studies will focus on three key areas:

1.- Study of water resources that can potentially be used for irrigation.

2.- Life cycle analysis, including the processes of regenerated water generation for the I-Rewater pilot actions.

3.- Socio-economic analysis, based on structured interviews with all stakeholders.

The ultimate goal is to obtain roadmaps that will make it possible to anticipate problems that may arise in new areas where the use of reclaimed urban water for agricultural irrigation as an alternative resource is introduced, as well as to expand and optimise its use in regions where it is viable in all aspects.

The working methodology and initial results were presented at the REUSE EUROMED 2024 Conference (Montpellier, France) on the afternoon of 29 October.
