Geothermal Seminar 2025 in Covilhã
On October 10th and 11th 2025, the Seminário de Geotermia 2025 took place at the Universidade da Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, whose organization, in charge of the Comissão Portuguesa de Geotecnia Ambiental da Sociedade Portuguesa de Geotecnia, was led by a member of the Portuguese team of the ThermEcoWat project, Professor Luís Ferreira Gomes, Technical Director of the Termas de São Pedro do Sul and had the involvement of Elsa Ramalho, from the Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG).
Presentation of ThermEcoWat posters
In this thematic seminar, as it could not be otherwise due to the interest of the subject and its target audience, mostly linked to research, 2 posters were presented to disseminate the ThermEcoWat project. The meeting also included a technical visit to the pilot of the TEW of S. Pedro do Sul, which included a visit to the catchments of hot natural mineral water, the geothermal plant and both bathhouses in operation in the concession of the Termas de São Pedro do Sul, the Balneário Rainha D. Amélia and its Museological Center and the Balneário D. Afonso Henriques. Additionally, a consumer of the heat produced by the geothermal plant was also visited.
Poster Content and Conclusion
- One of the posters, with the name O projeto ThermEcoWat – fortalecer a resiliência dos ecossistemas ligados à água termal (The ThermEcoWat project – strengthening the resilience of ecosystems linked) to thermal water, presented, promoted and disseminated the project and its motivation and actions developed in the Portuguese community linked to geothermal, as well as the partners that make up the TEW consortium, objectives of the various WGs and associated teams.
- The second poster, called Estudos geofísicos na perspetiva de optimização do local de uma captação geotérmica em S. P. do Sul, Beira Alta, Portugal (Geophysical studies with a view to optimising the location of a geothermal abstraction in S. P. do Sul, Beira Alta, Portugal), as sequence to the first poster, is an approach to the work that has been developed by GT1 of TEW in Portugal, and refers to the objectives of the actions carried out in the pilot of São Pedro do Sul and preliminary results obtained, which are expected to contribute significantly to the clarification of the hydrogeological model of the deep circulating waters of the São Pedro do Sul Hydromineral and Geothermal Field, giving more science-based indications for the location of new abstractions that allow obtaining the hydromineral and geothermal resource, either concerning higher available flows, or increasing the temperature, in relation to what is currently available.
The TEW project shows, once again, its interaction with the thermal and scientific community!
