The irregularity and reduction of precipitation mean that the Sudoe area is increasingly facing difficulties related to water scarcity. In Mediterranean and continental zones, the traditional problem has worsened, with frequent usage restrictions during periods of scarcity. In Atlantic areas, traditionally unaffected by droughts, the advance of the Mediterranean climate is generating increasingly frequent and intense episodes. Efficient use of water resources is an increasingly high priority, particularly for water-intensive activities such as agriculture. In this sector, moreover, the efficient use of irrigation water is a decisive aspect of competitiveness, given the context of constantly rising costs in recent years. Transnational cooperation is necessary given the shared nature of the challenge across the Sudoe area and the transnational dimension of the proposed results, which requires the active participation of actors from across the territory. Innovative digital technologies enable the conception of new intelligent irrigation systems, characterized by their high precision and comparatively low cost. Among these, virtual weather stations, developed from the extrapolation of data from fixed stations and the application of high-precision agrometeorological models, allow for substantially more precise irrigation recommendations tailored to each farm, notably increasing their efficiency compared to traditional options. e-Rigation will develop and test an innovative efficient irrigation approach based on networks of virtual weather stations, which will reduce the impact of agricultural activities on the water system of the Sudoe area and promote adaptation to a context of progressive water scarcity. Furthermore, a training program for producers and awareness-raising for water resource managers will be launched.
