The transformation of cultural and natural heritage into sustainable tourism products constitutes an opportunity for the development of the SUDOE territory, particularly for inland rural areas with some common challenges: depopulation and aging, limited coordination between cultural and tourism agents, as well as imbalances between rural and urban areas, these being more notable in inland rural areas adjacent to coastal zones that concentrate tourism and cultural resources, generally disconnected from the rest of the territory. RELIGHT proposes the activation of regional nodes that act as lighthouses for the development and experimentation of a systemic collaboration methodology that reinforces the value of the cultural and natural heritage of inland rural areas, developing sustainable cultural tourism products that promote competitiveness at regional and local levels, through: Creating collaboration networks between public and private actors from the cultural and tourism sectors. Implementing co-created cultural actions in rural areas, balancing urban and rural areas and generating sustainable tourism products. Evaluating the collaborative methodology and its results, developing policy recommendations. Promoting the adoption of the collaborative methodology and its transfer. As a result, the main beneficiaries will be: Inland rural communities, increasing collaboration with urban areas and improving competitiveness. Public authorities, integrating communities into policy formulation and programming. Tourism sector, developing sustainable opportunities in their business models. Cultural entities, improving connection with the territory and collaborating with new audiences. RELIGHT’s participatory approach implies an innovative solution that addresses cultural and tourism activities usually disconnected from each other, to generate spaces where synergies can be identified and joint work can be done. In this framework, transnational cooperation is essential to find common solutions considering specific territorial aspects that allow for their replicability.
