The European SharedH2-SUDOE project seeks to consolidate renewable hydrogen as a viable energy storage solution in self-consumption communities, especially in rural areas. The initiative, which covers territories in Spain, Portugal and France, aims to advance the technical and scientific knowledge of the sector, as well as to test innovative solutions in at least three strategic locations within the SUDOE territory.
Since its launch on 1 January 2024, SharedH2-SUDOE has organised innovation forums and working meetings to foster cooperation between its partners. One of its main objectives is to draw up a roadmap for the European economy based on renewable energies, with a special emphasis on green hydrogen. The initiative also involves key players in the energy sector, such as local authorities, companies, consumers, educational institutions and energy communities.
One of the project’s first achievements has been the production of a Diagnosis on the generation, distribution, storage and use of green hydrogen in the SUDOE space on a small scale. Currently, the project is progressing along three fundamental lines:
1. Assessment of energy consumption: A predictive platform is being developed to analyse the energy surplus of the participating communities.
2. Implementation of pilot cases:
Spain: A local administration is looking to create an energy community in an industrial estate.
France: A technology park with a university campus is working on the infrastructure for a sustainable hydrogen-based mobility system.
Portugal: Three municipalities are exploring how to use surplus photovoltaic energy to power an interurban hydrogen transport system.
3. Theoretical models for the integration of green hydrogen: these will be tested in the three pilot cases to determine technical requirements and capacities in energy communities.
With these advances, SharedH2-SUDOE is positioning itself as a benchmark in sustainable energy transition, promoting renewable hydrogen as a key alternative in the development of energy communities in Europe.
