STRATEGY AND ACTION PLAN TO PROMOTE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF FIRE PREVENTION PLANS

Summary

BIO4RES will result in a joint strategy for the economic valorisation of forest biomass, which will improve the viability of fire risk prevention plans and enhance forest resilience.

Description

The strategy aims to agree on long-term objectives and lines of action shared by the consortium that are integrated to improve the prevention and management of fire risk in the forests of the SUDOE area, consolidating the viability of prevention plans through the valorisation of the biomass extracted and helping to develop the resilience of the forests, without compromising their ecosystem, economic and social services. It will also help to boost the socio-economic development of rural areas, generating employment opportunities in forestry work and structuring the biomass value chain. Finally, it will contribute to decarbonisation through the use of a renewable, accessible and proximity energy source for the local population and industry.

This strategy will be defined around four axes:

  1. Fire prevention planning integrating the preservation of forest biodiversity.
  2. Innovation in forest biomass harvesting methods.
  3. Forest management, logistics centres and biomass consumption at local level.
  4. Training of agents and personnel of qualified crews in sustainable forest management.

The strategy will include:

  • Diagnostic report on the situation and contextualisation of territorial challenges.
  • Agreed objectives to address the challenges.
  • Priority lines of intervention to achieve the objectives.
  • Solutions developed and tested in WG 2 and good practices identified.
  • Territorial action plans for the adoption of the strategy.

The strategy is aimed at entities of the consortium and other local actors inside and outside the SUDOE territory to adopt the lines of intervention and solutions developed in BIO4RES with the objective of valorising the forest biomass exploited by the prevention works for its positive impact on the local environment, generate renewable energy, create employment in rural environments.
