As part of the activities prior to the BIT Congress on Bioeconomy, Innovation and Technology, a day was held at the Parc Agrobiotech in Lleida to present NEWPOWER, an initiative co-financed by the transnational cooperation program Interreg SUDOE.
The session was attended by participants in the mission of the Latin American Bioeconomy Network, organized by BiohubCat and the Bioeconomy Program of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), as well as other leading actors in the sector in Catalonia.
During the event, NEWPOWER was presented as a successful case of public-private and interregional collaboration, focused on the transformation of agroforestry waste into high added value products, promoting sustainability and the circular economy in the SUDOE region (Spain, Portugal and France). This project aims to promote social cohesion and territorial balance through innovation in key productive sectors, highlighting its impact on the food, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and organic farming industries.
The project was presented by Mariana Morales, researcher from the New Technologies for Food Processing and Food Sustainability group at the University of Lleida, led by Olga Martín-Belloso, who was accompanied by Laura Matias-Guiu, member of RECOOP, the non-profit cooperative from Lleida focused on promoting health and food sustainability, and which is in charge of the communication of the project.
In addition to the scientific and technological objectives of the project, the importance of communication was highlighted as a key tool for the transfer of knowledge between the academic, business and general public spheres, a fundamental aspect for the success of initiatives such as this one.
