As part of the European Green Week, the event “A Day of Science with NEWPOWER” will take place on 12 June in Lleida—a science outreach morning open to the general public, focusing on how research can turn agricultural residues into sustainable solutions and high-value products.
Jointly organised by the University of Lleida, the University of Zaragoza, Ingredalia, and the RECOOP cooperative, the event is part of the European project NEWPOWER, co-funded by the Interreg SUDOE programme, which addresses environmental and economic challenges related to the accumulation of agricultural and forestry waste.
The activity, free of charge, will be held at the Parc Agrobiotech in Lleida, and will include guided tours, scientific demonstrations and informative talks for all audiences. The goal: to show how science can contribute to sustainability, fire prevention, circular economy and public health.
During the event, participants will discover:

How the University of Lleida explores eco-friendly technologies such as pulsed electric fields to extract bioactive compounds from residues like vine prunings or broom.

How the University of Zaragoza investigates the therapeutic potential of these compounds, including antioxidant and anticancer properties.
🕚 11:15 AM – Science in a box: What’s inside these residues? -
Real-life examples from Ingredalia, showing how plant-based residues are transformed into functional ingredients for food, cosmetics or organic farming.
🕦 11:45 AM – Display of upcycled products and bio-based ingredients: What do residues become?
This event aligns with NEWPOWER’s communication goals: raising awareness on the value of residues and fostering collaboration between science, industry and society to address today’s environmental challenges.
