Dialogue and solutions to PFAS: participatory technical workshop in Burgos

The University of Burgos hosted a new technical workshop as part of the European project ALERT-PFAS, organized by the General Foundation of the University of Burgos (FUBU). The event, held on June 18, brought together around 20 participants, including technicians, researchers, institutional representatives and students, with the aim of reflecting on the environmental risks associated with PFAS, particularly in the context of forest fires.

The workshop focused on presenting the ALERT-PFAS project, covering its overall goals, preliminary results, and the lines of action developed within the SUDOE region (Spain, France and Portugal). Participants also took part in a dialogue session, where they were able to ask questions and share experiences related to environmental management, prevention and pollutant treatment.

The opening session was led by Jorge Izquierdo, representing FUBU, followed by a series of technical presentations, including:

  • Juan Picos (University of Vigo), on wildfire management and the use of firefighting foams.

  • Ana Pereiro (NOVA University Lisbon), who provided a global overview of the project and presented the mapping of PFAS presence across the SUDOE area.

  • Eduard Puga (Cetaqua), who introduced the digital tool under development for risk assessment.

  • Santiago Aparicio (University of Burgos), who presented the NADES4PFAS project, focused on the use of natural deep eutectic solvents to remove PFAS.

  • Finally, Luis Marcos Naveira led a participatory workshop as part of the UBU Verde programme, focused on natural area pollution.

The event concluded with a closing session and an informal networking lunch.
