Enhancing after-Fire Hydrological and Environmental Recovery of Agroforestry zones

Descripción

The EFHERA project “Optimization of the hydrological and environmental recovery of agroforestry areas affected by large fires” is focused on optimizing the planning of post-fire actions, ensuring the recovery of areas affected by large forest fires (LFF) in Southwestern Europe due to climate change. Affected areas suffer rapid degradation processes in the months immediately following the fire. In a climate change scenario, this degradation process is becoming increasingly rapid. If the implemented recovery and management measures are incorrect or not carried out immediately, the agroforestry recovery of the area may not occur. Therefore, the rapid and effective implementation of protection and recovery measures in the first months after a fire is fundamental. If we add the proliferation of large fires that hinder simultaneous post-fire action across the entire affected area, the recovery of burnt areas can only be addressed through exhaustive and ordered planning. It is therefore essential to establish the priority areas for action and the most appropriate measures to implement. The project’s actions are aimed at seeking and exploiting synergies between the forestry management services of administrations and the scientific community, using recent advances in the knowledge of hydrological and geochemical processes along with hydro-morphodynamic simulation tools for the design of specific actions in the affected areas. This project will make available to the forestry management services of institutions a digital hydro-morpho-ecological model of the fire-affected extension for the evaluation of areas where post-fire action is a priority and for the design and monitoring of medium/long-term agroforestry restoration measures. The actions of the EFHERA project will result in optimized planning with the ultimate goal of minimizing environmental degradation and forest loss in Southwestern Europe.
