The AgroSpace consortium recently convened at Portugal’s Douro region for its third Project Meeting (PM3), which was hosted by Symington Family Estates from 15 to 16 July 2026. The project partner opened the doors of their historic cellars and welcomed representatives from all 12 AgroSpace partner organizations across Spain, France, and Portugal into one of their private Portuguese quintas: Quinta do Ataíde. In such a magnificent scenario, the main goal of the gathering was to review technical milestones and align priorities for the next AgroSpace implementation phase.
An in-depth analysis on the project status
The meeting opened with an operational status report from the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC), acting as project coordinator, setting the context for an in-depth review of the project’s Work Package 2 (WP2) by the work package leaders.
Work Package 2 advances several key dimensions of the AgroSpace project, spanning technical development, strategic alignment, and practical validation. On the technical front, effort is focused on implementing the core platform, defining a data architecture based on integrated data spaces, and pushing Earth observation beyond standard remote sensing applications through new soil and biodiversity space-based indicators, promoting the agroecological transition.
Strategically, the consortium is aligning regional space frameworks while building a marketplace strategy driven by local-language webinars, B2B matchmaking, and thematic challenges.
Finally, real-world pilots are actively progressing, evaluating solutions for viticulture monitoring as well as disaster-risk management for the insurance sector to ensure broad operational impact.
Updates on the market outreach and the pilot fieldwork
The market integration and practical application of the project outcomes was discussed, outlining plans for user outreach, thematic challenges, and B2B matchmaking sessions combining online events with in-person networking, and updates on the pilot projects were also provided.
Regarding the pilot projects, progress was presented across two key operational areas: first, updates on the disaster-risk management pilot geared toward the insurance sector, highlighting the goal to expand stakeholder engagement across participating regions; and second, early results from the precision viticulture pilot. This second pilot is being conducted in Symington’s grounds, which allowed to conclude the formal meeting sessions with a field visit to the pilot sites, offering partners a first-hand look at the monitoring infrastructure deployed in the vineyards. Ahead of the formal agenda, the consortium representatives had the opportunity to connect during a guided visit to Symington’s Graham’s visitor centre, exploring the winemaking process from grape to bottle.
