The Smart Green Water platform is an interactive website that offers three main modules accessible from the navigation menu: Digital Twins, Water Scarcity Strategy and Technological Solutions. Each module provides tools, visualisations and downloadable resources to support decision-making in agricultural irrigation management.

Digital Twins Module

This section is the interactive core of the platform and contains:

Irrigation Strategy Simulator

The tool allows real-time comparison of three irrigation strategies on the same plot: conventional irrigation, irrigation according to maximum needs and irrigation with controlled deficit. Users can click the «Simulate» button to view the results of each scenario in terms of water consumption, distribution uniformity and soil water balance.

Pilot Plots Visualiser

The module includes an interactive map showing the project’s 5 pilot farms distributed across Spain, France and Portugal. Each plot appears with a technical sheet indicating:

  • Irrigation type (drip or pivot)

  • Territory (Catalonia, Andalusia, Murcia, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Alentejo)

  • Area in hectares

  • Number of IoT sensors installed

By selecting a plot, users can explore its digital twin in detail and access real data from several irrigation campaigns.

Technical Documentation and QGIS Tutorial

The platform offers a step-by-step tutorial to create digital twins using QGIS and the RIGE plugin developed by the project. The tutorial includes all configuration files for the 5 pilot plots, enabling technicians and managers to replicate the methodology on other farms.

The digital twin is built by integrating three layers of information:

  • Digital terrain model (DTM) with 2-metre resolution

  • Exact hydraulic replica of the irrigation system (pipes, drippers, valves)

  • IoT sensor network (soil moisture, flow rate, pressure)

Water Scarcity Strategy Module

This section presents the water management plans developed for 4 territories in the SUDOE area. The content includes:

Interactive Territorial Maps

A map shows the pilot areas covered by the project, from the Catalan Mediterranean coast to the Alqueva region in the Portuguese Alentejo. Clicking on each zone opens specific information on the water management strategy designed for that territory.

Regulatory and Methodological Framework

The platform explains the context of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), which requires water to be managed by hydrographic region across the European Union. Each hydrographic region must develop its special management plan, and Smart Green Water’s strategies align with this regulatory framework.

Territorialised Strategies

Each pilot territory has a strategy adapted to its specific water scarcity conditions, developed jointly by project partners under IRTA’s coordination. The standardised methodology can serve as a reference for other stakeholders in the SUDOE area.

Technological Solutions Module

This section functions as an interactive catalogue of digital tools for efficient water management in agriculture. The content is organised into:

Inventory of Digital Solutions

The catalogue gathers the main digital irrigation solutions available in Spain, France and Portugal. The list covers:

  • Soil, plant and atmospheric sensors to determine water status

  • Irrigation management software offering in-depth support beyond data collection

  • Mobile applications for decision-making

  • Automated irrigation systems

  • Circuits powered by renewable energy

Technology Characterisation

The project has completed a first phase with the publication of a characterised list of solutions, helping farmers choose the technology that best suits their needs. Each solution includes information on its functionality, scope of application and suppliers.

Recommendations for Users

The platform offers recommendations aimed at irrigators and irrigation communities on how to select and implement digital tools. These recommendations are based on pilot experiences and the territorial diagnosis carried out by the consortium.
