Youth and Science: ALERT-PFAS Engages Future Generations at NOVA University Lisbon’s Open Day

Lisbon, April 30, 2025 – The European project ALERT-PFAS, which focuses on the detection and mitigation of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), took part in the Open Day at NOVA University Lisbon with an engaging educational activity for pre-university students.

Participants explored how science and technology can help combat pollution from these “forever chemicals” through live demonstrations and interactive learning experiences. A fun and educational quiz tested their knowledge, and the top scorers earned the proud title and certificate of “Brainiac of the Day.”

This activity marked a step forward in the project’s broader outreach strategy, co-funded by the Interreg Sudoe Programme, aiming to raise environmental awareness among young people and inspire them to take part in the protection of natural ecosystems.

ALERT-PFAS continues to promote science-based solutions and foster collaboration between researchers, public authorities, and future generations to address the urgent challenge of PFAS contamination.
