Description

The evaluation and quantification of agricultural damage caused by climatic disasters, such as floods, hail, frost, or droughts, is a fundamental step in reimbursement procedures managed by the State or insurance companies. Currently, this evaluation is primarily carried out through on-site visits. This action aims to study the development of software tools that allow for the automatic quantification of such damages through the use of satellite remote sensing technologies.

To this end, a state-of-the-art review of existing tools for quantifying agricultural meteorological damage will be conducted. This analysis will also be based on information collected in WG1 and from other key stakeholders. Subsequently, work will focus on improving specific remote sensing tools. This will include identifying algorithms that require optimization to increase their reliability or expand their scope of application, as well as defining strategies for collecting in-situ data and spatial data used. Likewise, in-situ data collection and the calibration and validation of the tested algorithms will be carried out.

Finally, the necessary pathways to produce an operational tool will be defined, including the development of a priority list for the development or improvement of algorithms applicable to specific cases not addressed in the project, and the definition of specifications for the design of a software package that integrates the identified and improved tools, allowing their use by advisors in estimating reimbursement costs for farmers. Additionally, thematic days (Technical Pilot Days) will be organized for R&D agents specialized in satellite remote sensing and other agricultural chambers, with the purpose of disseminating the results of the pilot action and promoting its adoption in the agricultural sector.
