The SUDOE has extensive and varied forest areas that provide numerous services (wood production, soil stabilisation, CO2 storage, water quality, rich biodiversity…). The forest and the services it provides are increasingly threatened by various hazards such as anthropisation, fires, pathogens and climate change. The COOPTREE project aims, therefore, to preserve these resources for their current and future value (both economic and ecosystem), and to provide future foresters with a corpus of knowledge and experiments that allow them to make informed decisions. These strategic objectives are based on the creation of an expert knowledge base in this field, applied to the forests of the territory. Therefore, it is proposed to design a transnational strategy for the knowledge and conservation of genetic resources of interest. This work will be complemented by a better understanding of the ability of these forest species to resist water stress and drought. It will also build on the valuable legacy of the many experiments (plantations and management) that have taken place in the past. As the problems have evolved, the project will finally propose the implementation of pilot actions to preserve and improve the forest resilience of the territories. The southern location of SUDOE places it as a sentinel of European territories that will have to cope with major climate developments and, therefore, consequences on their forests. Working on the SUDOE scale offers considerable gradients of situations (pedological, biological, topographical and historical) and climatic influences. Forest actors are numerous and have a wide variety of skills and complementary experiences. The diversity of ecosystems and species developed there is unique and must be preserved, while constituting a decisive element for the adaptation and resilience of forests.

Transnational strategy for knowledge and conservation of forest genetic resources SUDOE

With the aim of protecting forest heritage and strengthening the resilience of forests in southwestern Europe, COOPTREE intends to develop a transnational strategy for the knowledge and conservation of SUDOE’s forest genetic resources. This document, which establishes common objectives and a long-term vision, aims to be a point of convergence of the approaches of the different territories to the preservation and adaptation of the forests of the SUDOE. Building on the achievements of the project, both in terms of the knowledge that will have been centralised and the knowledge that will have been generated, this transnational strategy aims to lay the foundations of an expert network that lasts over time, identify the relevant levers of action and knowledge gaps, and serve as a basis for the target territories and actors, as a directly adopted strategy, or to feed their own strategies for forest conservation and adaptation. Without prejudging the elements that emerge throughout the project, the strategy developed jointly by the partners could consist of three components: — A section on the forest context and the strategic bases being carried out in the participating territories. — A section on the knowledge gathered, which derives from the capitalisation of the knowledge already available and the knowledge generated by the project (act. 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3). — A section containing the strategic guidelines and their operational variants, which will specify the guidelines to be followed to preserve the forest resource (e.g. knowledge of genetic resources, conservation, diversification, enrichment, clearing, species substitution, etc.). The deliverables of the GT1 will feed into this realisation, as well as the outputs of the WG2 (pilot actions) will be able to illustrate some of the operational applications of the strategic guidelines developed.
Catalogue of pilot actions for forest conservation and resilience

The objective of this catalogue is to present in a synthetic and operational way the pilot actions that are currently experiencing new solutions to conserve forest resources, preserve and strengthen the resilience of forests. Pilot actions to be carried out in the territories (15 pilot sites are already planned) will include three types of solutions: 1/Planting new species and provenances to test their resistance in forests in the long term. This should help environments better cope with different threats. 2/Adoption of specific forestry actions to promote the adaptation and resilience of forests and the maintenance of associated ecosystem services. The aim is to improve, preserve or restore forest cover, for example by enriching the masses, which favors the mixing of species. 3/Implementing actions for the conservation of the forest genetic heritage. These actions aim to respond to important local challenges. The wide variety of forest situations (main objective of the masses, composition in species, age of the masses, etc.) and of the pedocclimatic conditions found must allow a good representativeness of the forest contexts of southwest Europe. The techniques used, the resources mobilised and the results of the pilot actions will be exploited and transferred 1) within the partnership, 2) to other local, regional and national institutions and actors and 3) to other territories of the EU through the European networks of partners and partners to facilitate their ownership. This catalogue will be integrated into the metadata base (ACT2.1) and will illustrate some of the operational recommendations of the Transnational Strategy (achievement of WG1).
