Possessing a Ph.D. in Biosciences from the University of Coimbra, supplemented by an M.Sc. in Vegetal Biology from the same university, and a B.Sc. in Agronomy from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, I currently serve as an agronomist and researcher specializing in grapevine phytopathology at the Portuguese National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV). My primary focus lies in Grapevine Trunk Diseases. My professional journey includes previous roles as an agronomist at the Centre Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Fisheries under the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture and Sea. In this capacity, I operated as a phytopathologist and phytosanitary inspector, overseeing EU plant pests’ quarantine programs. This involved tasks such as prospecting, identifying quarantines and RNQPs, and reporting findings to EUROPHYT. Additionally, I held responsibility for the certification of grapevine nurseries at both phytosanitary and quality levels, as well as tree fruits certification. In the realm of agricultural pest management, I spearheaded the development and implementation of the regional agricultural pests warning system for major crops, including grapevine, kiwifruit, olive, apple, pear, potato, citrus, and chestnut. With over 30 years of experience, my career in phytopathology seamlessly blends laboratory expertise with practical fieldwork. My professional journey began with an internship in Virology at the University of Lleida as part of an Erasmus scholarship. Since then, I have provided phytopathological support to agriculture in central Portugal, specializing in diagnostics and control methods for various crops, particularly focusing on grapevines and their specific phytosanitary challenges. This dedication is reflected in my master’s and doctoral theses, which explored grapevine wood diseases. I also extend my expertise as an agronomic consultant, planning and supporting field trials for phytopharmaceutical products and providing guidance to wine crop farms. I’ve been invited to speak in dozens of technical talks for farmers and technicians. Published dozens of technical brochures on phytosanitary problems. I’m a regular collaborator in local newspapers writing about phytosanitary issues. My contributions to the academic community include the publication of 9 articles in journals, 2 book sections, and 2 books. I have organized a significant event, co-supervised an M.Sc. dissertation, and received 4 awards for my work. In the realm of research projects, I have participated as a researcher in 3 projects and contributed to the technical development of 6 others, collaborating with 80 peers in co-authorship of scientific papers. My areas of expertise encompass Agrarian Sciences, with a focus on plant breeding, plant protection, and viticulture. Actually, I’m also an integrated researcher in the Centre for Functional Ecology at the University of Coimbra.
