Within the framework of the Interreg Sudoe ECOSPHEREWINES project, the Strategy for the Implementation of Green Infrastructure (GI) in wine-growing landscapes of high ecological value in the SUDOE space has been developed.
This strategy draws on the experience gathered across four experimental areas in France, Spain and Portugal, selected for their biophysical, climatic and landscape diversity.
Its main objective is to serve as a common strategic reference framework for actors in the wine sector, public administrations and private entities responsible for managing recognised wine-growing areas, helping them to identify, design and implement GI networks aimed at enhancing Ecosystem Services in vineyards.
To this end, it proposes a common and coordinated approach across the entire SUDOE space that integrates wine production with biodiversity conservation, ecological connectivity and climate resilience, building on:
- The ecological restoration of wine-growing landscapes.
- The implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS).
- Coordinated territorial planning between regions.
- The integration of agricultural, environmental and tourism policies.
The strategy is structured around 4 objectives developed through 12 strategic lines and 28 concrete actions, applicable by different stakeholder profiles and at different scales of intervention, from the plot to the wine-growing territory as a whole.
With this roadmap and underpinned by participatory governance models with the active commitment of winegrowers, wineries, administrations and citizens, the SUDOE space aspires to establish itself as a European benchmark for ecological transition, where the vineyard functions as a resilient and multifunctional landscape that harmonises production, nature, culture and sustainable development. A vision that also places at its centre the rural communities that depend on the vineyard as the foundation of their economy, their heritage and their landscape.
