On October 28, CIM Viseu Dão Lafões organized a workshop focused on the prevention and control of cyanobacterial blooms in inland waters. The event took place at the Tondela Technology and Entrepreneurship Center as part of the European Cyan’EAU SUDOE project and was supported by the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Porto, the Portuguese Environment Agency, and Paralab SA—all of which are partners in this project.

The event brought together researchers, representatives of public entities, water resource managers, and other stakeholders involved in water use and protection, with the aim of sharing scientific knowledge and discussing solutions that contribute to preserving the quality of the region’s water resources.

The workshop began with a welcome session featuring Nuno Martinho, executive secretary of CIM Viseu Dão Lafões; Carla Borges, mayor of Tondela; José Pimenta Machado, president of the Portuguese Environment Agency; and Maria da Conceição Santos, deputy director of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Porto. This was followed by the roundtable discussion “Cyanobacterial Blooms: Causes, Dynamics, and Global Consequences,” dedicated to the causes, dynamics, and consequences of cyanobacterial proliferation, featuring presentations by Olga Lage and Sara Antunes from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Porto.

The second part of the workshop was devoted to the participatory activity “From Assessment to Group Action,” in which participants were invited to discuss specific challenges related to the identification, prevention, and communication of these phenomena. The meeting concluded with the presentation of the working groups’ conclusions and the identification of recommendations for the next phases of the project.
