The study examines legal frameworks, management models and international best practices to identify opportunities for improvement and strengthen water resilience across the SUDOE area.
The European project SOLLAGUA has published the “Legal Report on the Regulatory Framework for Treated Wastewater Reuse”, a study providing a comparative analysis of legal frameworks, management models and practices relating to treated wastewater reuse across different territories.
The report examines the legislation applicable in Spain, Portugal, France and Israel, as well as selected Australian jurisdictions, with particular attention to technical requirements, authorised uses, administrative procedures and established monitoring and control mechanisms.
It also addresses governance and risk management models, analyses the distribution of responsibilities among public authorities, operators and end users, and identifies best practices and barriers to the implementation of water reuse systems. Furthermore, it explores how water reuse is integrated into climate change adaptation and water resilience strategies.
Based on this analysis, the study aims to identify legal, methodological and operational approaches that could be transferred to the SUDOE area, as well as provide recommendations to strengthen the health and environmental safety, efficiency and sustainability of treated wastewater reuse systems.
