The scientific magazine EU Research has published the article “Making the most of scarce water resources” on the I-ReWater project in its Summer 2026 issue.
On pages 29-31 of the “Summer 2026” issue, the article explains in an accessible way how the I-ReWater consortium has been exploring, since early 2024, the use of reclaimed water as an alternative for irrigated agriculture in a context of increasing water scarcity. The article also helps readers understand the role of innovation and European cooperation in adapting the agricultural sector to climate change.
Although the agricultural sector is commonly identified as a major consumer of freshwater, Javier J. Cancela, coordinator of I-ReWater, points out that this view needs to be nuanced. “Water used in the agricultural sector does not disappear into a black hole; it is used to produce food. However, there is scope to use water resources, particularly reclaimed water, more efficiently.” This is precisely the aim of I-ReWater’s applied research, which in 2026 is entering its final year of implementation.
In this regard, the conclusions and resources generated will be openly available for consultation at the end of the year through the “I-ReWater HUB” (https://i-rewater-hub.com).
