The European Soil&WineResidues project continues to advance knowledge and sustainable management of vineyard soils across the SUDOE territory. In this context, researchers involved in the project participated in the XXXIV National Soil Meeting, held in Alcoi (Alicante) from 1 to 4 September. This key scientific forum provides an opportunity to exchange knowledge, explore new lines of research and deepen understanding of soil diversity.
The XXXIV National Soil Meeting brought together soil science specialists from across Spain to share and discuss current research in the field. Organised by the Spanish Society of Soil Science and held every three years, the meeting combines the presentation and discussion of scientific research with the study and classification of soils directly in the field.
Among the Soil&WineResidues participants were researchers from the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry at Campus Terra – University of Santiago de Compostela: Esperanza Álvarez Rodríguez, Raquel Celada Blanco, María Fernández Sanjurjo and Ana Barreiro Buján. The meeting gave them the opportunity to share the work being carried out within the project and learn about research conducted by other specialist groups.
During the first day, a scientific poster session was held in which Soil&WineResidues was represented through a study prepared by the Misión Biológica de Galicia (MBG-CSIC). The session provided an opportunity to present some of the project’s progress to soil science researchers, exchange views on the results obtained and learn about other ongoing research in the field.
Participation in this forum was particularly valuable as it provided an opportunity to connect with other groups researching vineyard soils, explore different scientific approaches and identify potential areas for collaboration and synergies in future research.
Learning from soil diversity
Field visits are a fundamental part of the National Soil Meeting. During a series of field trips, participants were able to observe, analyse and discuss the characteristics, formation and classification of different soil profiles.
Although the visits were not specifically focused on vineyards, the soils studied differed considerably from those commonly found in Galicia and Portugal. Some, with a greater presence of calcareous and carbonate-rich materials, are more similar to certain soils found in the French Soil&WineResidues territory.
Understanding this diversity is particularly valuable for the project. Broadening knowledge of soils with different characteristics provides researchers with additional tools to interpret the results obtained across the different Soil&WineResidues territories, where soil conditions vary considerably.
The field visits also had a strong educational component and encouraged extensive discussion among specialists, facilitating the exchange of experiences and perspectives on the behaviour and distinctive characteristics of different soils.
Participation in the XXXIV National Soil Meeting therefore helped to increase the visibility of the work carried out within Soil&WineResidues, broaden the consortium’s scientific knowledge and strengthen connections with other research groups, particularly those working on vineyard soils. This exchange contributes to a better understanding of vineyard soils and supports the development of more sustainable strategies across the SUDOE territories.
