Fashion Forward | Calculation of carbon and water footprints for textile products

Summary

"The scope of garments extends beyond the store or the wardrobe; they have a direct and quantifiable impact on the environment. Through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), we can determine the resources consumed by a garment or the emissions generated."

Description

GENERAL PILOT INFORMATION

  • Pilot name: Calculation of carbon and water footprints for textile products
  • Responsible partner(s): MODACC
  • Location:
    • Data collection In the three countries
    • Data processing and analysis: Barcelona
  • Duration: October 2025 to May/June 2026

CONTEXT AND PROBLEM

This pilot assists companies wishing to implement a sustainability plan or begin transforming their design process to align with the new Ecodesign Directive. To reduce the environmental impact of products and propose changes, it is necessary to analyze the current situation and establish a baseline. One way to achieve this is by determining the carbon and water footprints of products through a life cycle assessment.

PILOT OBJECTIVE

The primary objective is to assess the environmental impact of three products for each of the fifteen participating brands. This assessment will involve identifying key hotspots within their value chains and providing recommendations to improve environmental performance.

PROPOSED SOLUTION / INNOVATION

Companies learn to use life cycle assessment systems. These tools help them understand their impact and systematize value chain management, ensuring access to organized, comprehensive data throughout the production process.

The results will serve as a foundation for defining industry best practices and ecodesign strategies applicable to the sector as a whole.
