The GestEAUr project is carrying out a pilot initiative in Portugal to demonstrate the potential of reclaimed water as a sustainable alternative for irrigating urban green spaces.

The GestEAUr project continues to make progress in the search for innovative solutions for more efficient and sustainable water resource management. On this occasion, Parque Verde da Várzea, in Torres Vedras (Portugal), is hosting a pilot initiative focused on the reuse of treated water for the irrigation of green spaces.

The initiative involves the use of reclaimed water, known as água+, produced at the Torres Vedras Water Factory through an ultrafiltration process. Its application to a lawn area makes it possible to evaluate an alternative to the use of drinking water for activities that do not require water intended for human consumption.

This initiative is being developed through collaboration between Águas do Tejo Atlântico, Aqualia, Torres Vedras City Council, and the Municipal Water and Sanitation Services (SMAS) of Torres Vedras.

In addition to its technological component, the initiative highlights the importance of cooperation between public administrations, water management entities, and specialised companies in promoting solutions that can be extended to other territories.

This activity is aligned with the objectives of the Interreg Sudoe GestEAUr project, which promotes sustainable and efficient water management through technological innovation, territorial cooperation, and the development of solutions adapted to local needs.

With this pilot initiative, GestEAUr continues to move towards a more circular model of water resource management, in which the reuse of treated water provides a means of reducing pressure on drinking water sources and addressing sustainability challenges.
