Within the framework of the e-Rigation project, each partner contributes specialized knowledge and capabilities to improve water management in agriculture. In this context, the participation of the Murcian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Development (IMIDA) stands out as a public research organization specialized in developing innovative solutions for the agri-food and environmental sectors.
A key role in the development and validation of tools
Within e-Rigation, IMIDA contributes to the development and implementation of virtual weather stations to improve irrigation management in areas facing water scarcity. Its work includes the application of geostatistical techniques, the use of data from weather stations and satellite imagery, and collaboration with Euskalmet to fine-tune analysis and forecasting systems.
In addition, IMIDA participates in the integration of these solutions into water management applications, the implementation of field trials under real production conditions, and training activities for farmers and irrigation communities to support the adoption of the developed tools.
Experience and objectives
IMIDA’s contribution is built on extensive experience in remote sensing, geographic information systems, agroclimatic analysis, and irrigation advisory services, as well as its involvement in initiatives focused on sustainable water management.
The institute has also participated in leading projects such as LIFE TRIPLET, CLIMALERT Sudoe, TELERIEG Sudoe, REDSIM, and PRECIRIEG Sudoe, all aimed at technological innovation and helping agriculture adapt to environmental and climate-related challenges.
Within e-Rigation, IMIDA’s main objective is to improve the accuracy of the information available for irrigation decision-making, particularly in areas where nearby weather stations are unavailable or where microclimatic conditions require more tailored solutions. In doing so, it helps promote a more efficient, resilient, and climate-ready agricultural sector.
