The Duero Intermunicipal Community (CIM Douro) on e-Rigation

Piloto CIM Douro 2

As part of the e-Rigation project, each partner contributes specific expertise to promote more efficient and sustainable water management in agriculture. In this context, it is worth highlighting the participation of the Douro Intermunicipal Community (CIM Douro), a supramunicipal public entity that brings together 19 municipalities in northern Portugal and plays a key role in transferring innovative solutions to the region’s agricultural and wine-growing sectors.

A Key Role in Validating and Transferring Results

As part of the e-Rigation project, CIM Douro is involved in improving applications for efficient water management and is hosting one of the pilot initiatives designed to evaluate systems that integrate irrigation management tools, meteorological data from virtual weather stations, and decision-support applications. In addition, it collaborates on analyzing the economic feasibility of the developed solutions, participates in training activities for farmers and technicians, and contributes to the transfer of results to public administrations and local stakeholders.

Experience and Objectives

CIM Douro’s contribution is based on its experience in land-use planning, climate change adaptation, and meteorological information management. The organization operates the Disaster Alert, Management, and Monitoring System (SAGMC), which integrates a network of automatic weather stations and a digital platform for risk monitoring, creating synergies with the solutions developed within the e-Rigation framework. It also has experience in European projects related to agri-food innovation and territorial data management.

In the e-Rigation project, its goal is to promote the adoption of technologies that improve water use efficiency, drive the digitization of the agricultural and wine sectors, and help address the challenges arising from water scarcity and climate change in the Duero region.
