On 17 and 18 November, the European consortium will hold technical sessions open to the public at the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Prado to present the activities, results and conclusions of the project, which is funded by the Interreg Sudoe 2021-2027 programme

  • Researchers, companies, agencies and public administrations from Spain, Portugal, France and Andorra will share the lessons learned from deploying wireless sensor networks in high fire-risk pilot areas.
  • The sessions are open to the public, subject to prior registration, and automated simultaneous translation will be provided.

Valladolid, 20 October 2026. The European project SenForFire – Low-cost wireless sensor network for the prevention and early detection of forest fires (S1/1.1/E0040) will hold project dissemination sessions on 17 and 18 November 2026 at the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Prado, in Valladolid. During the sessions, which are open to all audiences, the project partners will present the results and conclusions of work that has sought new technological responses to forest fires, which are becoming increasingly frequent and intense in south-western Europe.

The sessions will be organised by the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage of the Regional Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport of the Junta de Castilla y León, a beneficiary of the project, and will take place in the Fray Pío Hall and the former Sacristy of the monastery.

Monitoring the territory in real time and at low cost

SenForFire was set up to demonstrate the potential of wireless intelligent sensor networks (WSN) to monitor forest environments on the ground, with high spatial resolution and in real time, in support of forest fire prevention, detection and early warning. The project is committed to an affordable, sustainable and reliable technology that strengthens the preparedness and response capacity of rural municipalities in the Sudoe area and their local populations.

The devices developed measure meteorological, environmental and soil parameters relevant to estimating fire danger, and provide early detection of wildfire emissions. Over the course of the project, pilot networks have been tested in areas of the Sudoe region with different climates, terrain and vegetation, and in a variety of settings: forests, natural areas of cultural interest and the wildland-urban interface. In Castilla y León, the pilot area chosen was the Cultural and Natural Area of Las Médulas (León), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A consortium from the Sudoe area

SenForFire is led by the Institute of Physical and Information Technologies of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC-ITEFI) and brings together 13 partners—universities, research centres, companies and public administrations—from Spain, Portugal, France and the Principality of Andorra. The project runs from January 2024 to December 2026, with a budget of €2,385,000, of which €1,788,750 comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg Sudoe 2021-2027 cooperation programme.

In addition to the technological development, the project includes a postgraduate MOOC for current and future professionals in the Sudoe area, as well as training for municipal teams on wildfire self-protection plans.
